Should the Nintendo NX be delayed to the Holiday season 2017?

I would only delay it if it's not ready, or if it really needs some type of upgrade. If they are happy with the system, launch it in March.

Nintendo has no desire to participate in the hardware arms race. They said they want to broaden the user base, but if they followed the 4k route which only a small amount of customers can afford, they would contradict themselves. A march release has quite some advantages as many others already have stated.

They need to win the news cycles.
A delay and launch during the Christmas shopping season would do just that, also gives them time to iron out firmware/software and probably get allot more games ready for the consoles debut.

More time is never a bad thing in development. ;)

The Xbox One and Playstation 4's Firmware/Software wasn't exactly fully fleshed out on launch, nor was the Xbox 360's and Playstation 3's.

Thing is, Nintendo has likely had that extra development time already.  NX was probably their focus for quite some time now, possibly as early as 2014, as evidenced by the lack of new WiiU games beginning development since around then.  My guess is that holiday '16 was their initial target.

March may not be the ideal time for the launch of a new console, but it allows them to have the spotlight of new hardware all to themselves (Neo notwithstanding), have NX out in time for their fiscal year's end, and save the holidays for big game releases as well as a possible handheld variant, since NX will likely have more than one form factor.

They should aim for a March release because the die hards will pick it up as soon as possible and then Nintendo will also see the holiday boost based on how many big titles they can crank out of the NX first few months.

Ya as long as they have a steady flow of appealing post-launch software, a solid price and strong marketing than it shouldnt matter what month they release it in. If having all those things doesnt help than its likely that it wont sell regardless of when it releases.

March is fine if the system is ready to go and it has the games to support it. It's an unusual month to launch, but that is during tax season which is a good time for hardware sales. Q1 system launches might be uncommon, but they're not unheard of. Granted, it's usually handhelds launching in Q2, but in Japan the PS2 & PS4 were both Q1 launches. Here's each month by system launches in the U.S.:

Jan.:
Feb.: Vita
Mar.: PSP, 3DS, NX
April:
May: Atari 7800, Saturn
June: GBA
July: Game Boy
Aug.: Genesis, TG-16, SNES
Sept.: NES, PS1, N64, Dreamcast
Oct.: Master System, PS2
Nov.: GameCube, Xbox, 360, Wii, PS3, DS, Wii U, PS4, XBO
Dec.:

And now Japan:

Jan.:
Feb.: Xbox, PS4, 3DS
Mar.: PS2, GBA, NX
April: Game Boy
May:
June: N64
July: Famicom, SG-1000,
Aug.:
Sept.: GameCube, XBO
Oct.: Sega Mark-III, PC Engine, Mega Drive
Nov.: Super Famicom, Saturn, Dreamcast, PS3
Dec.: PS1, 360, Wii, DS, PSP, Wii U, Vita

The first home consoles to launch in November in the U.S. were the GameCube and Xbox, so it's actually a more recent phenomenon for the U.S. market. Every other system launched earlier in the year. While first-month sales weren't super high, many of them still had good sales. The N64 sold about 325k its first week and went on to become the fastest-selling system ever at the time in the U.S. until the PS1 rebounded in Sept. '97. The Dreamcast sold 569k in just three weeks in Sept. '99. The PS2 sold 391k in its first 3-4 days. Launching in November, meanwhile, has yielded mixed results. The Xbox, GameCube, PS4, and XBO had strong November launches, pulling in 722k, 663k, 1140k, and 909k respectively. However, the PS3, 360, Wii, and Wii U sold only 197k, 326k, 476k, and 425k in their respective launch months, not especially strong. Granted, that may be because of supply shortages, but that may have also been the case with the PS2 as well.

In Japan a system launching outside the holidays seems to have minimal impact on launch sales as well. The PS2, a March release itself, sold over 630k launch week, a record that stands to this day, while the GBA sold 611k its first week, the 3DS nearly 375k, and the PS4 over 309k. Those are all just as good if not better than many Nov. or Dec. launches.

Launching in March will likely have no negative impact on the NX's sales. It may be the first home console to launch in the U.S. in Q1, but I doubt that will hurt it any more than launching in the summer or early fall did to other systems in the past. And we know Japanese gamers have absolutely no problems turning out in droves for system launches regardless of what time of the year it is.

If the NX sells 300-400k first week in Japan and 500k first month in the U.S. and maintains a fairly healthy baseline throughout the April to October period, then we can say that the system is off to a good start.

Great post, like I said, the month it launches really isn't important and things like hardware features, software quality/output, price point, marketing/advertising are going to decide how well it does regardless of launch month.

With the Xbox Scorpio and PS4 Neo touting 4K, I have a feeling that's gonna become the norm.

But then again, most people still have TVs that only have 1080p instead of 4K, and the price of 4K TVs doesn't help (the cheapest I found at BestBuy is at least $600).

Plus, I don't know if many people are happy with the idea of having to get a brand new TV just for the new consoles.

Anyway, to get to the point, Nintendo would like to reach a wider audience with the NX, which is hopefully more powerful than the PS4, but what if releasing so soon before the PS4 Neo and Scorpio isn't a good move? Should Nintendo delay it to the 2017 Holiday season so they can make the NX as powerful as it needs to be? Or should they just go with their current plan for a March 2017 release?

The NX is a gen 9 console. It is going to be something with an entirely new controller, interface... it's brand new from top to bottom. The Neo and Scorpio are PS4/Xbox Ones. They're not going to be next generation machines. So the idea that Nintendo should change their launch plans for non-competeing consoles doesn't make any sense to me.

I think everyone's getting the Neo/Scorpio thing wrong and falling for corporate BS. They're just revisions.

I think holiday 2017 is probably ear marked for the NX portable (provided there are two hardware lines). So they probably want to get the console out a few months before that to give it a few months on its own.

I don't think Nintendo really is interested in matching the specs on Neo/Scorpio. I'd be OK if NX is about as powerful as XB1 (not happy, but OK with it).

At least that would be a very good sized upgrade over the Wii U, whereas Wii was not over the GameCube.

You'd be easily able to run a game like Zelda: BotW at 1080P + 60 fps with added detail, better textures, better lighting/shading, higher poly count, etc.

For Nintendo's needs that's quite good.

March is not a great time to launch a console but if Zelda is ready (and it should be, it's been in development forever), and you have 2 other smaller scale Nintendo titles to go with it along with a few third party ports ... that's a good enough launch. Better to launch than just wait.

lol "NX portable" NX is a home console, no such thing as NX portable.

Another gold from soundwave, seriously believing zelda botw would wun at 1080p, 60fps AND better graphics, textures...

The X1 hardware can only run zelda botw at 1080p 30fps and some minor visual upgrades. Only someone delusional would think the above.
