When did he say this? I've listened to the entire G&N investor day conference, and I didn't hear anything about it.

So Sony are still going for defined generations while MS will go for the continuous updated consoles route

No, Sony is going for console generations while MS is attempting to move back to PC (with a console that can also run those PC games).

Watch me stream games and hunt trophies on my Twitch channel!

It's gonna be interesting to see how the early adoption rate of the PS5 will be.

edit: Nvm... just saw Zhuge's post and seems like this isn't accurate at all.

I'm totally fine with it. Changing every 3 years and keeping BC with the last version (but FC just with the middle gen upgrade).

If they do indeed go ahead with the PlayStation 5 I expect it will be Sony's last defined generation and the ps5 will be continuously updated, and I expect it won't be called the PlayStation 5 either.

It makes 0 sense to not call it the PS5.

If they want to create an iterative platform like the IPAD it doesn't make sense to make the first iteration of that platform the PlayStation 5.

Ok. I have a question....

So when the PS5 comes along. And not only does it play all PS4 games but all its games can work on the PS4 (even if only at 720p@30fps).

Would it be considered a new generation or an iteration.

We have iphone 6, iphone 6s and then iphone 7.

all software still works on the iphone 4.

Would be a really hard call... I would have to say it would depend on frequency of updates and how much difference there is between iterations.

It makes sense. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see 3 years between consoles from now on.

2016
Neo releases | PS4 guaranteed support for a further 3 years

2019
PS4 support begins phasing out | PS5 releases | Neo has guaranteed releases for a further 3 years

2022
Neo support begins phasing out | PS5 Upgrade releases | Standard PS5 has guaranteed support for a further 3 years

This would be the best route for them to take. It's a great strategy.

Yup, i've been saying for a while they should adopt a 3 year release schedule with each system being supported for 6 years.

Of course it is. It's the PC games strategy with minimal system requirements, recommended system requirements and systems where you can push all sliders to the max. ;)

Only difference is that the developers can make these recommendations and presets for each game individually and aren't obligated to special terms of the platform owner.
