Agreed, more importantly its unlikely free online play would cause a signficiant sales boost. Many opted for 360 in spite of PS3 having free online. |
The 360 was first, and best, for quite a long time. Multiplats were almost always best on 360, and PS3 was stupid expensive for a long time.
However, even after 360 got a solid leadership position established in the US/UK, the PS3 was a feasible 'companion' console for many 360 players to buy later on in the gen. A part of that was being able to add the console without worrying about yet another online fee.
Flash forward to Gen8. PS4 has a solid lead, and the X1 might be a decent pickup for many who only have the Sony console for now. The prospect of adding another annual fee to the equation makes that a little less comfortable.
Further, there is simply no way MS is going to be able to charge PC players a monthly fee to play Halo 6, Forza 6, etc. So look out for Xbox players to blast Spencer and Co on twitter : "Hey, we're paying the same $60 for the game, but PC players get free online and we have to pay for XBLG? WTF?".
Xbox has never been about money. If it was, it wouldn't exist. Keeping the paywall is a negative for the purpose of Xbox. Dropping it would be the next major step in a long line of post-2013 decisions that are great for Xbox gamers, PC gamers, and Microsoft as a whole. Nadella/Spencer make Ballmer/Mattrick look like trash thanks to a series of solid decisions.
Come to think of it, why would anyone who liked Xbox WANT them to keep the MP paywall. There literally is zero positive to that. The "profits" are almost a rounding error for MS corp.
