I think "Because we don't want to because it's our game" is quite satisfactory enough. Do we want a female Mario too? Or perhaps a male Samus? We can't tell Nintendo what to do if it isn't in their agenda, software development wise. It's not in the lore and to them it obviously doesn't make sense at this point in time. They threw us a bone with Linkle, go chew that one up.
