Forums - PC - Help making my PC good for gaming....

Oh boy. I went into this thinking a power supply is a power supply. Didn't realize anything special was involved. Here's a link to what appears to be a generic supplu that I got on eBay: http://m.ebay.com/itm/321284338575?_mwBanner=1

And I was looking at this card because I'm just looking to expand the number of games I can play on my PC, graphics aren't my biggest concern. Does this look good? http://m.newegg.com/Product/index?itemnumber=N82E16814202197&ignorebbr=1&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-Advanced%20Micro%20Devices-_-na-_-na-_-na&AID=10446076&PID=5257136&SID=ShopAMD

From the looks of the specs and of the picture on that PSU, it only has a single 6-pin that you can use. There are two but the second one is not on the proper rail so it might not work correctly, at least that is what the descriptions lead me to believe. Don't worry though it is a minor mistake and can happen to anyone, especially if you are new to PC hardware.

I would suggest returning it right away using the cheapest option for return you can find. Shipping shold only be about 5 bucks or so.

Once returned pick up one of these: https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-Continuous-Warranty-Supply-100-W1-0500-KR/dp/B00H33SFJU

It's a few bucks cheaper than what you paid and should help make up the shipping cost difference a bit.

As for the card you selected, it will work but I think you will be dissapointed at how games run on it. It is damned cheap though, I'll give you that. The next best card, the Nvidia GTX 960 , the cheapest I can find is $169: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007709%20600537575&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=30

I just looked up your Dell case and it is pretty small and you will not be able to install a typical 10" vidoe card. You will need to get a Mini verison designed for Mini-ITX cases.

I found this to determine the size of the case: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/t/19481730

With that said, you could get the Refurb GPU at the top of the list in my last message.

Here is another find though at around the $175 price: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202151

I hope you don't think I am tyring too hard to push that price point on you, it is just that if you are used to a PS4/XboxOne you need at least this to get the same level of performance and quality while playing games.

Thanks for the extra info. I look into each of those cards and the PSU. I'll let you know how it all goes....

Maybe I'll get the GTX 960 4GB instead of 2GB. It has 10% off plus a $20 rebate which makes the current selling price $40 off. Seems like a good deal.

As seen as you are going for a pretty much full overhaul you should really consider changing the i3 to an i5, that said removing the CPU is a big of a bigger job than just sliding in a graphics card so if you are very green to the PC innards scene you should probably do without it for now and see how you get on with the i3.

If you haven't done so already you should just check to make sure that your version of win10 is the 64bit before even considering changing from the 4gb of RAM,

if that says 32bit on your machine you aren't going to be able to use more than 4gb of system ram (the graphics card memory doesn't effect this) Also keep in mind that you are currently sharing some of the system ram to be used as graphics memory with the onboard system, when you add a standalone graphics card your bios (is most likely) going to be set to no longer share this memory out and use the graphics cards memory instead, so you will actually get a small boost of system RAM from inserting a graphics card into this PC.

It is 64-bit. Thanks for that info. Learning this stuff is quite fun. :0

I would also like some help also these are my specs
Windows 10
Intel Core i3-500SU (2.0 GHz, 3MB L3 Cache)
Intel HD Graphics 5500 up to 2133 MB Dynamic video memory
4GB DDR3 L memory
500GB Harddrive

If you're asking for help with upgrading your PC the one key thing to include is the model of the PC or in this case, laptop.

It is possible to get some upgrades for a laptop, the most common one being to upgrade from a magnetic HDD to a SSD, especially a laptop which is running 4gb of memory but potentially eating up 2GB of that for video ram, that would mean your laptop would be making great use of a thing called a Page File on the harddrive in place of RAM and if it was using the far higher bandwidth of a SSD instead of a classic HDD you should see a great increase in system performance.

Also if it's something with an i3 in it you most likely would have the option of upgrading from the 4gb to 8gb of ram too. 4gb was the cap on a lot of socket 775 motherboards, but a bit more memory could go a long way to making your system a lot better (again providing that the version of windows10 you are using is 64bit and not 32bit)

Also if you are going to go with a new SSD instead of your own drive you might well need to use a PC or a HDD caddy to clone your current drive over to the new drive, or else you'll be starting fresh!

Yeah, it really doesn't get much better than when you have it all done and closed back up and it works well :)

One thing which can help that happen btw is one of these guys http://www.ebay.ie/itm/Anti-Static-Wrist-Strap-Wristband-Computer-Repair-Prevention-ESD-Discharge-Band-/152101813276?hash=item2369f97c1c:g:u28AAOSwDV1XRCLd you click the biting part of it onto something which is earthed (a metal part of the back of your monitor while it's plugged in) and you should massively lower your chances of causing any ESD damage to the PC components, ya know that little spark which happens between 2 people touching sometimes? if you happen to have been marching about a carpet or rubbing balloons under your arms you can get that going off when you touch your motherboard, does slightly more damage to sensitive electronics than a spark noise though!

That's the zoomed in damage of it on a PCB but yeah, I'll be honest if you just grab the back of the PC case while it's still plugged into the wall before you get to work (and avoid balloon rubbing) you should be mostly fine working away without one of those straps, they're just a precaution but still it's worth keeping in mind if you happen to have an afro or love balloons!

Can you post the link to whch card you decdied on?

I want to make sure you don't accidentally purchase one that won't fit, it has to be 9.5" or less in length and if it is almost 9.5" you will need to make sure the power connection is on the side and not the back of the card.

Sure. I'm going with Amazon for the purchase because it's a $1 cheaper and free shipping. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0167OW8M0/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=37GIODHN6SPA0&coliid=IRVTQ0QGAOJAN&psc=1
