Forums - Nintendo - Monolith Soft is working on Zelda: Breath of the Wild

When I first saw the trailer I instantly thought of the feelings I had when I first saw Xenoblade 1. Breath has the same "feel", and that's a very, very good thing. It's like a modern, epic take on a classic video game. It was perfect for Xenoblade, and it's perfect for Zelda.

Also, I'm not worried about Monolithsoft being slowed down on their main project. They have two studios, have greatly expanded and always have a secondary project on the go. This should be no sweat for them.

I don't think their strangers to helping out on other Nintendo projects and it doesn't seem to have slowed them down in the past...

I know they helped with Skyward Sword, and I feel like I remember hearing about them helping with New Leaf...

Since being acquired by Nintendo, Monolith have assisted with the development of Skyard Sword, Pikmin 3, New Leaf, Link Between Worlds, Splatoon, and now Breath of the Wild.



Yep. That acquisition definitely paid off for Nintendo. (Those Xenoblade games aren't half bad either.)



It makes sense. If there is such thing as an expert in open world design using Wii U hardware then it is Monolith. Anouma would have to be crazy not to utilize their talent. It is obvious that the Wii U hardware is getting pushed to its limits in Breath of the Wild.

Makes a lot of sense! I'm still playing Xenoblade X and enjoying it a lot so would be nice to add those good elements into Zelda as well

Agreed, getting a world as big, seamless, and detailed as XCX to run at a rock solid framerate on Wii U is a testiment to Monolith's programming skills. Hopefully with their help, Breath of Wild can achieve the same technical standard by the time it releases.

Nintendo needs to hire more quality development teams but i'd be surprised if they currently have the income to support that kind of expansion. While I agree Nintendo needs to hire more dev teams, Monolith has been helping out with EAD games for a while now. They worked on Skyward Sword and Pikmin 3 as well. Their next game wouldn't be due out until at least 2018 anyway, probably longer, so they may as well help to ensure that NX gets a strong launch title in Breath of the Wild.

Couldnt it be argued that working on Skyward Sword & Pikmin 3 is what caused Monolith Soft to take 5 years between Xenoblade & Xenoblade X?

One could indeed theorize that. But we could also theorize that without their help, games Skyward Sword, Splatoon, and Pikmin 3 could taken even longer to come out. As painful as the wait for XCX was, (exacerbated by the absurd 9 month wait from its Japanese release to its Western release, which was kind of out of Monolith's hands and down to just bad management by Nintendo proper) I'd say any setbacks caused by their work on other titles was worth it if it meant multiple other games arrived sooner.

I certainly agree with your overall point, it just seemed as though your last post was implying that helping out with other games wont take away from thier own releases.
