Crap.

Better start looking on eBay.

Thanks a lot

No, you do NOT need to play drakengard, that game series is a prequel that occurs WAY BEFORE Nier it just sets up the world of Nier but its events dont tie into Nier.

Check this chart to understand the timeline

Drakengard 3 is a prequel to Drakengard 1 and 2 and then WAY later Nier takes place in ONE of the many endings of Drakengard, every drakengard has different endings with different possibilities for the future wich means that Nier is just one of the dozens of possible futures after drakengard 3 (the first game in the timeline).

Also Drakengard story is so convoluted that it feels like it doesnt make sense, im not talking about Metal Gear levels of complex story telling but something so weird and hard to understand than even after playing Drakengard 3, 6 times for every one of its endings i still dont know what the f#ck happened at the end... you really dont need to play those games to play Nier, you can treat it as its own independent series.

I walked away from Drakengard with one thing firmly planted in my mind.

"The japanese story is really fucked up."

Incest, love triangles, pedophilia... Jesus, Japan.

Want timeline image in much higher resolution.

Also, Nier is the sequel of the true ending of Drakengard 1, not Drakengard 2.

The "true" ending of Drakengard is the first one, since that's the one that segues dirtectly into Drakengard 2. Until the release of Nier, the ending that led into it was referred to as mostly a joke ending.

I don't agree.

Drakengard 2 whether rightly or not has been pushed almost into a spin-off or non-canon title. It wasn't developed by Yoko Taro and is the least important game in Drakengard/Nier universe by far.

You can argue it's been ret-conned this way, and you have room to argue, but ultimately that's where we are now.

Canon isn't something decided by whether or not the same director was involved. Drakengard is an IP owned by Square, and Drakengard 2 is a numbered sequel the branches from the first (and arguably least devastating) ending. Nier, regardless of quality, is the spin-off series. This doesn't make it worse, though. But the status of Drakengard 2 as a full-on sequel is held by it's name alone; Drakengard 2. Not Drakengard: The One Not Directed by Taro.

I look at the whole thing as seperate timelines anyway. If Zelda can get away with it, then why not?

The person who directs and is the father of the series gets to decide what is apart of the main series or not. The numbering of the titles isn't explicit in that. A lot of people don't consider Final Fantasy X-2 apart of the main series despite the numbering. And we've seen games be considered part of the main story and then removed later on with MGS: Peace Walker.
