Forums - Microsoft - Spencer: Scorpio won't do anything for you if you don't have a 4K TV

What if I don't care about 4K for the next 4-5 years and all I want is 1080p 60fps from a MS console?

I have a 4K TV, but if the game is only "upscaled" it won't attract much attention to me if it indeed comes at a PREMIUM price as he said.

lol that's the first thing I thought as everyone kept getting excited about these consoles claiming they're aiming for 4k... just how many people have a large 4k TV but are still playing consoles mainly? Those haven't become very affordable just yet.

me and many others.

Oh I have no doubt there's people out there with them, but large 4k TV's cost well over $1,000 in the US and a heck of a lot more abroad for the most part. Consoles are the affordable option, exceedingly few shows even support 4k, and 4k TVs really need to be quite large to make it worth purchasing them, and I feel like there's probably not a lot of overlap between console focused gamers and large 4k TV owners... chances are the games really won't take full advantage of it initially as they have to support the older consoles as well, so that's certainly little incentive for such a large purchase.

Personally, I think the price of these TVs is still too high at the moment, as it will eventually plummet just as the 1080p TVs did. There's nothing wrong with them planning ahead of course, but I get the impression many people don't even realize they need a new TV to experience what these consoles are advertising.

That can't be true. Having the bigger processing power will naturally give games better performance.

What a strange statement to make almost 18months before the system will appear, also ... is the only difference all that power makes going from 720p/900p/1080p > 4k like... won't do a single thing for those games with choppy framerates on the X1? how is that even possible, if the games are running under the Scorpio profile surely they would have full access to the power of the system, why would it not allow a game running at 1080p increase from a shuddery sub 30fps to a locked 30fps.

I'm confuse

Well we know thats not right becasue even the Xbox ONE S is capable of improving how some xbox one games will run.

Its just a misinterpreation of a very badly worded answer from Phil Spencer.

It's hard to fault the reporter as misinterpreting when Spencer told him it won't do anything for him.  That's all on Spencer.  It is an understandable answer considering they don't want people waiting for the Scorpio and skipping the S.

l <---- Do you mean this glitch Gribble?  If not, I'll keep looking.

I am on the other side of my sig....am I warm or cold?

With a 6 Tflop GPU it should be able to run quite a few games in Native 4k... Other than the GTX 1080 there isn't a graphics card on PC that can beat it by much. It's similair in power to a TITAN X (6.14Tflops) and a fair bit stronger than a 980 TI (5.63Tflops).

There will games that won't run at 4k Natively but It's a very powerful machine, we'll just have to see what the price point is.

I'm going by Spencer quote. To have ONLY 4k (native or upscaled) with everything else basically the same and still having to pay a premium over the HW isn't very enticing for me... but since it's 18 months away things may change. If all/most of the excelent X1 games are upscalled in a good maner by the Scorpio it will have a better start.

So basically he is saying stick with the Xbox One.

Kinda having a Déjà vu with what Don Mattrick said a few years ago.

21:9 1440p > 4k
Also kinda on topic I guess but anyone else on these forums have a 4k TV as well??

Yeah i would like to see 21:9 support aswell. Even 2560x1080p would be cool and would probably allow for 60 fps too, but i don't think there are many 21:9 TV's out there let alone affordable ones.

That said i wonder what other components will change, at the very least they will have to increase the RAM for native 4K.

That can't be right. How can you run 4K and not be able to run 1080p?

I'm not tech savvy, so please someone explain this to me :(
