Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Eurogamer: Spec Analysis: Xbox Project Scorpio

I dont give a damn about 4K at all, Id only consider buying one if it ment I could play all my games in 60fps rather than 30.....

it seems too many assumptions are being made here and does it not seem very strange that,

1- MS is giving TFLOP targets 16/18 months before release?

2- Sony is keeping hush hush on details when they supposedly were going to release the Neo this year?

I suspect Sony will be revising which GPU they go for with AMD and which price point they want to reach. If the neo was really going to be out as soon as we previously assumed there would be an announcement made.

MS tipped their hand really early and that gives a huge amount of time for the current hardware leader to chill and mount a battle plan.

Honestly I hope so, the more powerful the console becomes, the better :)

Not necessarily. Hardware revisions are normally announced a month or 2 in advance

Microsoft Announcing Scorpio so early when they didn't even do that for the Xbox One is more confusing. Potentially to avoid consumer backlash from letting people lap up the Xbox One S whilst planning something even bigger the following yera, but maybe also because they know sony is releasing Neo this fall and wants to get the word out there.

It's still a very suspicious move, especially since Andrew House pretty much confirmed the week before to the WSJ that the Neo is real and there will be an upgrade, but then not even teasing it or mentioning anything about it on the conference to me indicates that the specs are not final. One of the initial rumors was that the CPU was not set in stone at the time as Sony was trying to figure out where to price the console.

With MS pretty much going like "fuck it, we'll go this far", all of a sudden gives Sony the idea of how far they can push the price and still have the best perceived value compared to their competitor.

I do think they should go all in and push for the high end, that's the segment of the market that will buy a 2nd console during the generation and is very performance oriented.

In any case I'm ready to drop some cash, now I just need to see at what specs they settle at.

People saying they would see much a different between a PS4 NEO with 4Tflops, and XBox Scorpio with 6Tflops don't understand much about computer graphics. Sure if you look hard enough with comparison videos there will be some, but they will be so close few unaided eyes will see it. Now would you really notice when playing a game.

It's just a measuring contest.

PS Also, wouldn't the memeroy be DDR4?  As in the orginal plans for the Xbox One?

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

DDR4 is still pricy. 2017 means vega and not polaris imo.

Talking about what a pc can achieve and a console can achieve with the same or similar specs is always a little off is it not?

The xbox one can do far more than the equivalent powered PC, as can the Ps4.

Look at what the 360 was able to do for god sake, the equivalent PC cant do anything close.

This is true, but we also know that Sony and MS consistently over promise and under deliver in terms of graphical output. I don't doubt some games will be 4K native, but given past form I'm going to be unsurprised if all of the most graphically demanding games are upscaled 4K.

the Xbox Scoprion wont do native 4K as of now, graphicscards with 6TF on an overclocked Intel Corei7s are even struggling rendering in 4K

MS will pull it off. DX12 will finally come into play here. I wouldn't be shocked in the least if Scorpio becomes the leading device for 4k gaming. I know it certainly won't be the Neo.

Memory: 12GB of GDDR5?

Microsoft also dropped some hard figures in terms of memory bandwidth too, telling us that Scorpio has over 320GB/s of throughput. This gives us a couple of useful data points. Firstly, it's almost certainly the case that the ESRAM experiment on Xbox One is now a thing of the past - Microsoft will be following the approach pioneered by Sony in using a single, unified pool of memory based on PC graphics RAM technology. Which technology that is remains to be seen - will it be GDDR5 or the faster G5X found in Nvidia's GTX 1080?

This is where it all falls a part. If you have a bandwidth of 320Gb/s then it doesn't matter if you have DDR3, GDDR5, GDDR5X or even HBM. They are offering the exact same amount of performance.

While 6TF is not really enough for 4k Gaming on pc it migth be different for consoles. I have no doubt that some titles will be native 4k while other will have better framerate or better AA.

Flops has no correllation with resolution.

Vega is GCN 4.0 like Polaris. Microsoft has likely used Polaris and done a semi-custom design of it to meet it's performance targets.
Vega hasn't taped out as far as I know.

AMD builds it's GPU's to be fairly modular, they can add or take away functional units for specific markets or customers, you don't have to take a large GPU and hack bits off/die harvest.

A Geforce 1070 which Polaris 10 is likely to be competing against eventually...  Can do 4k 30fps just fine. Scorpio will have a few advantages over the 1070 though such as more bandwidth, which is important for high resolutions.

CPU's tend not to impact resolutions that much, usually it just hampers minimum and maximum framerates, but considering consoles are a set-quanitity in terms of CPU performance, developers can build their games within those walls.

pioneered copied from the Xbox 360 by Sony

ha ha, um the Xbox 360 would like to have a word with you...
