Ok thanks. Was Ferbusson lying, confused, or just not aware of what is going on? He didn't just mentional the raw GPU/CPU (which is technically true) but went on to talking about his engineers and how they were taking advantage of it to keep frame rate/resolution up in demand spots.

I mean that is a pretty specific example.

I guess we won't know unless omeone asks him again but maybe he was referring to the extra gpu and cpu power that is used in HBR, but it wont improve the resolution or framerate, that is clear now

Someone should ask him because it sounds like two heads saying different things.

I thought I read somewhere the coalition boss saying it will make games better looking.

If you have an Ultra HD premium 4K tv, you can display games in 10 bit color instead of the standard 8 bit. Which means more shadow detail in dark areas (makes use of improved black level on HDR tvs, less black crush) and more detail in bright skies (HDR tvs have much higher peak white)

It will be interesting to see how it will look in reality. Will it use HDR 10 or Dolby vision in DCI P3 or rec.2020, or do 4K tvs support 10 bit RGB. Plus not all HDR tvs are equal with different peak brightness and contrast ratios. HDR tvs are still in their infancy.

In a nutshell it can make HDR games better looking, brighter whites, blacker blacks with 4 times as many shades in between. Plus perhaps 900p upscaled to 4K will introduce less scaling artifacts.

I guess when fergussen said the more power from cpu/gpu would reduce penalties to frame rate and resolution i assumed he wasnt talking about just HDR improvements.

Hopefully someone asks him for clarification.

Yeah that statement is rather specific.

Maybe he got ahead of himself and assumed the extra power would be available for more than HDR rendering. Perhaps he just wanted to boast about their auto scaling engine. It will certainly be true for the pc version.

Or pehaps DF can notice an actual difference while pixel counting.

I still find it hard to believe, there must be some impact on games performance

Well, I know my model C PS4 plays games a LOT quieter than the model A and B units do. And at a 40 watts savings too. So there probably is benefits to the Xbox S that no one knows about yet. Being newer has to have some things better.

Is there a way to know what model you have?

As someone who has used a 10-bit panel for over a decade... It also results in less colour banding in games.

Yes! If you still have your PS4 box. Look at the CUH-XXXX number. If it is 1000 series it's a model A. If it's 1100 series it's a model B. If it's 1200 series it's a model C. The number will be more than 1200 because of the particular style, like the Darth Vader edition. Mine is CUH-1215.

On topic: The Xbox One S will definitely do some things better than the OG Xbox One because it is a total redesign. Nobody redesigns something to run same or worse. What would be the point?

Hey! They got SONY on my amiibo! Wait a minute. Two great gaming tastes that game great together!

I agree, but thats nothing new, but developers won't take advantage of the improvements over the HDR, obviously some things might run a bit better regardless but its deffenitely not a "big jump" or a "mid cycle upgrade" just a improvement over the original running games generally the same, but overall its clearly a better console. The new PS4 consoles are also better then the launch consoles, which use like a lot more energy and the new ones had different ram (4x 2GB instead of 8x 1GB if I am correct) which also was a minor improvement.

But I think slim models should be as they are, just minor improvements, so I am happy about that

I believe someone said something about games with dynamic resolution benefiting from the extra power. Since rendering frames takes less time with more powerful hardware, the (average) resolution can be slightly higher.
