Forums - Sony - God of war is ruined (opinion)

i believe that this is just the intro to the game, and its slower because Kratos is old and trying to teach his son. I think the story will have a twist where something happens to Kratos and you will now play as his son (an older version) and the gameplay will be like the old ones

His son is useless. Kratos is obviously not trying to teach his son how to be ruthless. If so, Kratos had plenty of opportunities to make points. Instead he showed compassion and understanding. Something happens to his son and that all goes out the window. Kratos ruthlessness will come out full swing. Seriously, he is a general in a Greek army. You can tell he taught his son respect "yes sir" but not fighting or slaughtering.

So remove what makes God of War and you are left with something that doesn't resemble God of War.... Okay, gotcha

Kratos isn't the only thing that makes God of War, God of War. My point was that the only feature that resembles anything God of War in this trailer is the fact that there's Kratos on it.

Might as well call Playstation All Stars Battle Royale a God of War game since Kratos is in it, no?

You're last point makes no sense. You applied my point to a situation backwards. It's a god of war game. Kratos makes God of War God of War. Not the reverse.

The whole game, including game play, all revolves around kratos and his character. So yeah, it's pretty much the thing that makes God of War. Blades of Olympus = kratos = game play. Ruthlessness = kratos = plot.

Heh, I don't see the comparison at all, but each to their own I guess.

I'm not a GoW fan (haven't played them), so coming without a set perspective of what a god of war game is, I thought it looked great. I have a few friends that are into GoW though, and they seemed very excited to see a change in the formula. Though they are also Dark Souls fans, and this seems a bit Dark Souls-ish, so maybe that's the reason.

Not at all? A grizzled father figure guiding an inexperienced young person through a dangerous wilderness? The scripted sequences? The over-the-shoulder camera? The walking simulation? Stopping to admire the scenery? A young person hunting a deer in the snow?

I dunno. I really think Santa Monica took a page from Naughty Dog here.

"A grizzled father figure guiding an inexperienced young person through a dangerous wilderness? "

was present in god of war 3 also

"The scripted sequences?"

present in previous games also

Look at it from a different angle. Valkyria Chronicle's upcoming sequel, Azure Revolution, wasn't that well received because instead of being a strategical game it stripped down to a three-men army RPG-ish. Sure, the art style looks exactly the same as Valkyria and probably the setting they're on is Gallia or somewhere near it. But that's not Valkyria Chronicles, that's for sure.

Here we have Kratos, and that's pretty much it. Instead of fixed/rails camera angles, we have a back view. Instead of Kratos running rampant doing all kind of crazy combos, we see him attacking in a fierce but definitively slower manner. There's not even a combo counter on-screen. It doesn't help that probably they choose some kind of story scripted sequence to unveil it, but still. And it doesn't look like this revolves around Kratos per se, since you take partial control of Charlie. Everything shown is Kratos teaching Charlie how to hunt, really. All I could remember of the other God of War was how angry Kratos was and his desire to bring Olympus down; anything that stood in his path end up dead.

It certainly doesn't remind me of GOW at all but it still looks good. The combat seemed less bombastic than previous games. It almost seems like its following the modern gaming formula a bit.

All in time. Kratos is THE god of war. He hasn't a reason to dust off those old chains yet.

I see, well, that's more sensible, lol. I'm sure you'll be able to ditch the heavy axe at some point for something a little faster -- weapon choices are something they'd better keep from the earlier games. Some sort of god powers should give a boost at some point as well, but still... O_o

I think Santa Monica probably realised that GoW was getting a little stale after Ascension, and decided to take a gamble and make, like, the hugest departure from the original formula that they could possibly concieve. This is easily the biggest shock this E3, if you ask me. We'll see how it pans out, but I  can't believe Sony would do this with one of their most iconic franchises. The balls on them!

He was using a Two-handed Berserker battle-axe, which has it's own advantages such as using weight for deadly one-hit attack's, which the entire point isn't ''Speed'' because speed would ruin the impact of the force.
Kratos have always ended up getting several different weapons for different types of foes.. You can't be critical if you don't even know the details and it's funny you ''Seemingly forgot about that'' Because a GOW fan would have already considered that fact. Also, it doesn't hurt to have a basic knowledge in weapons when you play these sort of games. Different weapons= Different uses. Only a moron would use that kind of axe for anything but what it was designed to do, i don't think Kratos is a idiot when it comes to weapons. Also, i believe he have a level-system as well, which means? You can upgrade abilities.

Yup, I already mentioned that there will be more weapons. And special abilities, too, which we saw a bit of in this trailer. You're also right that I'm not a God Of War fan. I have played and enjpyed the games, though, and watched plenty of more skilled players than myself play them. This is a completely different battle system, and a completely different game. Maybe I'd be a bit more positive if this were a new IP, but it isn't, and that means God of War as we knew it is effectively dead, and Sony has lost just a bit of that diversity that they're always being praised for.

To be perfectly honest, I kind of like how it looks and how it might play.  Mostly because it seems set up in a way that could allow a stronger focus on its story and a little more freedom with its combat.  Maybe.  Of course I only watched the gameplay trailer and not anything else of it (and only once) so I could be mistaken.

I can somewhat agree with you.  This definitely seems more story focused. That's not necessarily a plus for me, but a can see why it is for a lot of people. I dunno about more freedom, but slower combat doesn't always equal worse, so we'll just have to wait and see on that front.

I didn't see a problem with it at all. You know I was kind of hoping to see the chains bound to the Flesh of the character, but you have to start somewhere, and at least the backstory starts with the first game, at least that's how it seems. Otherwise the original Kratos wwould be making an appearance in God of War 4, or 5.

I'm intrigued and impressed by what I saw from God of War Kama can't wait till I pick up a Playstation 4

Oh wait, I meant GEARS of War

In all seriousness, take a close look at these three gameplay videos. You don't honestly see the God of War E3 2016 demo as some combination of the bottom two videos?

Tbh I wouldn't say it's ruined but it's certainly different, I have more interest in the new game than the previous ones. To me it seems like an RE to RE4 situation.
