His son is useless. Kratos is obviously not trying to teach his son how to be ruthless. If so, Kratos had plenty of opportunities to make points. Instead he showed compassion and understanding. Something happens to his son and that all goes out the window. Kratos ruthlessness will come out full swing. Seriously, he is a general in a Greek army. You can tell he taught his son respect "yes sir" but not fighting or slaughtering.
