Forums - Sony Discussion - Blu-ray sees boost in consumer adoption

Here are two interesting articles on blu-ray. I'm sure many will put the spin on this and try to find nothing but negative in good news, but it's undeniable that an increase in sales and % of market are positive for blu-ray. Sure it has a long way to go, but it is still good news regardless of the long road blu-ray has ahead.

So, although still far from mainstream, an increase in blu-ray sales is better than a decrease or no change at all.

Lol, but I don't know about blu-ray porn...all the stretchmarks and pimples, etc. could be sorta nasty.

Blu-ray Sees Boost in Consumer Adoption

Posted March 24, 2008 11:38 AM by Josh

Since the end of the format war, consumers are increasingly purchasing Blu-ray when given the option of purchasing Blu-ray or DVD. Recent retail reports show that Disney's release of Oscar award-winning film 'No Country for Old Men' has sold between 10-15% of its total home video unit sales on the Blu-ray format. Previously, the industry has been accustomed to seeing high profile day-and-date releases selling between 5-10% on high definition formats.

Warner's recent release of 'Appleseed Ex Machina' has sold nearly 30% on Blu-ray, showing the enthusiasm animation fans have for the high definition format. While the unit numbers for 'Appleseed Ex Mahina' aren't nearly as large as those for 'No Country for Old Men', the implications of this increased adoption rate are nonetheless substantial.

The adult industry too is seeing increased demand for Blu-ray. Adult high definition leader Digital Playground has seen demand for Blu-ray spike in recent months. As more and more standard definition quality content is made available online, fewer people are purchasing adult content on DVD. Blu-ray is seen as a way for the adult industry to re-energize slowing home video sales.

As had been predicted, many consumers have been holding out from purchasing Blu-ray titles because of the format war. Now that Blu-ray has been named the victor, more and more consumers and picking up Blu-ray titles every Tuesday.

9 mil. Blu Discs Sold To Date; 3 million Already This Year
Comments: 0

Blu-ray Disc sales continue to pick up steam, with total U.S. sales since inception (about a year-and-a-half-ago) hitting 9 million units through March 16, according to HMR research.
In just 11 weeks this year, BD unit sales have hit 3 million units, seemingly putting the format on pace to easily hit at least 15 million units for 2008.
After averaging weekly sales ranging from 200,000 - 300,000 the past two months or so, sales spiked up to 319,000 units, driven by Miramax's release of "No Country For Old Men."
The Oscar-winner, despite having few special features of any kind, sold a whopping 68,000 units the week ending March 16. That's double the next closest title, Fox's "Hitman: Special Edition," which was also a relatively strong seller.
Prior weekly top-sellers this year were ranging from 10,000 - 30,000 units.
Look for even stronger numbers in the coming weeks with much bigger box-office titles slated for release.

good news, but should be expected, as now HDDUD is officially dead.

Two things to say:

1. I think this has already been posted.

2. If you found the correct writer, you could say that Blu-ray is a massive failure and that it will be destroyed by people downloading TV reruns to their iPods.

Yeah, these have been posted in some form or another. Blu-Ray is taking off a little bit slower than DVD, but this first quarter has been really promising, especially with the defeat of HD-DVD and the sale of 3 million discs.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

I think blu-ray sales will remain neglible until christmas '08 , a steady rise in market share is what i'm predicting unless HD downloads has something to say.

I wouldn't call 10-15% of market share "neglible". That's close to Apple Computer's %, would you call Apple computers that?

i dont think we are going to have hd downloads for a while because one bluray is 50gb. and look when have comcast its like $50+ and you have to wait for it to download but at the same time comcast give you a 50gb limit a month. so you can download 1 movie a month with comcast, but you also have to pay for the entertainment . also from the companys prospective, a bluray disc will cost less than 10 cents but for comstumer to download they are going to need alot of fast server which cost them quite a bit of money

10-15% of the overall Disc bases movie sales or 10-15% of one movie ? the first is significant , the second is as I said neglible. I won't consider blu-ray signifant until it's reaching 25-40% of the overall disc based movie market until then I think that digital downloads are just as likely to suceed , we're still not exactly sure how the consumer is going to react to blu ray in the long term although i'm sure movie studios will do everything in their power to force it on them. I want blu-ray to suceed as this in turn boosts the Sony's profitabilty and covers the defecit made by the PS3 so that in the long term it wasn't a bad move to released such a technologicaly advanced console. But we still have to be realistic with ourselves. comparing the market share of a computer to optical media doesn't make for a good analogy in my opinion , gaining 5% of the computer market could be seen as much more of an achievment than 5% of the disc based movie market .different competition , selling points , costs , profit margins etc etc apple's market share is actualy much more significant in terms of value than blu-ray's (I think....I hope)
