Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo NX Supplemental Computing Device preview?

Hmm well, that kind of tech has been around for a while now so its nothing new...Its just amd is now doing it which is a bigger deal than just some manufacturers on exclusive device models. And of course, it is faster than previous gens and etc.

But the issue with thunderbolt is there is a licensing fee from intel I believe (correct me if that got changed) so Nintendo will probably make their own connector like MSI does

So maybe someone could try to clarify this for me, this is a recent patent that will in time supplement the NX, or is this possibly going to be the NX? It's a neat idea either way, in my opinion. Sort of a throwback to older console add-ons like the 32X, The N64 Expansion Pack, and perhaps most relevantly, the 64DD. Or am I way off on that comparison?

A long time ago, Nintendo made a pattent that hinted at this kind of tech. Now that we see AMD, the most probable candidate to supply Nintendo with hardware, announcing this thing, the rumours about the NX using this seem to be getting some solid evidence. For now it's still all just speculation.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

This is basically the Tablet + Docking Station type solution people on this forum also had.

Would be neat if you buy the NX homeconsole (but its also your handheld).
Its a 2 in 1 solution.

Come home and plug your handheld into a docking station => more performance, and games get upscaled in resolution.

That's really what I want out of a console, Nintendo or otherwise.  With some of the streaming options from Sony and Microsoft, it's gotten close.  But both options are limited, and feel sort of tacked on.   Something built from the ground up to provide virtually seamless and endless gaming, at home and on the go would be awesome!

Fair enough, thanks for bringing me up to speed.  I'm very eager to start getting concrete information about the NX.  Also, I was on my phone when I first saw this topic, and didn't see the video in the first post.  Now on a tablet, I see it, but when I click it, it just keeps opening a new, blank tab.

Yeah, I saw that yesterday. Only problem is that you can only boost GPU power that way, you can't boost the CPU. Nintendo is going to need to design NX with a better than necessary CPU to start with so that the CPU won't be a bottleneck once the SCD is released later in the generation.

Is this based of speed requirements for the CPU?

what would the cost (ball park) be if Nintendo uses this tech? I mea launch price of the console day 1

If its used day 1 it will probably be $400

Sounds great and based on SMD's other video back in December (check it out if you haven't yet) I do believe that the SCD is the NX's "gimmick". Problem is, if NX launches without the SCD abilities it's going to seem more like an add-on after the fact and not part of the initial vision. Let's hope it's there on day one.

for a 2in1 type of thing?

well the 3DS released at 249$.

So Im guessing this will be a 249$ (handheld) + 150-200$ for the docking station + controller (nintendo would have to go cheap on controller).

400-450$ price. (no more dual screens, or silly expensive wii u gamepad type controllers)

But you get both a handheld and a homeconsole with 1 buy.

If this happends, NX will be weaker than PS4 or XB1 though.

Even with offloading some gpu grunt to the docking station, the handheld will limit the system abit I suspect.
