interesting!
Well, we now know for sure that if Nintendo goes with the supplemental device that AMD can deliver it with ease.
In the wilderness we go alone with our new knowledge and strength.

Nintendo is going to need to design NX with a better than necessary CPU to start with so that the CPU won't be a bottleneck once the SCD is released later in the generation. |
^this, they really need to push the CPU with NX...

This tech looks really amazing. If the NX does behave like that, it would be a clever way to push both handheld and home console on a single pack.
This is basically what I've been thinking the NX will be.
It would be awesome if they could get it working with multiple 'handheld' devices too. I've always been thinking that the WiiU suffered from not being able to hook up multible gamepads, like originally intended. The dual screen technology could never really reach it's full potential imo. Having a single gamepad, with the need to pass it around is tedious, but giving every player their own could make for some very interesting couch co-op and party games (just look at the jackbox games for example).
Also giving PC gamers who want to play Nintendo games the opportunity to hook their own rigs up to the handheld, could be potentially awesome. Offer a simple box for the mainstream consumer, but leave the option for customization and usage of existing hardware open. We'll see about that.
But who knows, maybe Nintendo just does something completely different. This is a cool concept though.
Nintendo might do something like that, but I don't think it would make sense to have a handheld unit as the supplemental unit.
If we're talking about a handheld, Nintendo would want it to be relatively inexpensive to appeal to their core market. It's also going to have to be small and enclosed. So, I'm not sure how much power they can squeeze into it. If it's as powerful as the Vita, that'd be a drop in the bucket compared to the PS4's power. Even if it was more in line with the Shield tablet, we're still talking a pretty modest boost.
I think it's more likely the supplemental device would be a straight up video card. Nintendo seems oddly concerned with the size of their console (maybe more of a Japanese market thing) and having a GPU on a separate thing would enable them to keep the actual device pretty small.
Or of course it could just be something that never makes it beyond the patent phase.
That is awesome. But the real question for me is if Nintendo is smart enough to make their CPU strong enough to take full advantage of this. Didn't the patent also say that even ram will be improved through this method? Because if that is the case, Nintendo just needs to make sure that NX has a awesome cpu.
This is basically the Tablet + Docking Station type solution people on this forum also had.
Would be neat if you buy the NX homeconsole (but its also your handheld).
Its a 2 in 1 solution.
Come home and plug your handheld into a docking station => more performance, and games get upscaled in resolution.

So maybe someone could try to clarify this for me, this is a recent patent that will in time supplement the NX, or is this possibly going to be the NX? It's a neat idea either way, in my opinion. Sort of a throwback to older console add-ons like the 32X, The N64 Expansion Pack, and perhaps most relevantly, the 64DD. Or am I way off on that comparison?
