So basically they are saying it's a mobile console with its own LCD display.

Hmm sounds interesting.
I'm guessing Nintendo wants to not be left behind on the whole VR thing that everyone is jumping on.
Slashing the unit shipment by half though sounds weird though. If this thing really is hybrid between home and handheld console, I would prepare for a shipment that takes both of those audiences into account.
Personally I think a mobile console would be smart for Nintendo, at least it would be immediately different from a PS4/Neo or XBox One/Two.
If they could get good performance out of the chips maybe they could even have some PS4/XB1 ports playable in portable form at a reduced resolution/effects.
I've always felt this was probably the best Nintendo could do unless they come up with another miracle controller like the Wiimote, which I don't think is very likely.
I don't want VR. I'm not convinced the tech will do anything for video games so if this NX has VR, count me out.

I think this is akin to saying 3D graphics or online play won't do anything for video games.

I have a 3ds and almost never use the 3d feature and online play connects people across the world. VR is more like the former and less like the latter except much more expensive and unwieldly. Many of the VR games I've seen have not impressed.
If the NX comes out later than March next year, I'll be severely pissed. I feel like Zelda now will be holiday 2017

I have to wonder if the untimely and very sad passing of Mr. Iwata led to some infighting at Nintendo over the direction of the NX project. If that's the case, then I wouldn't be surprised if they can't make March 2017 and we're looking at fall 2017 with another delay for Zelda.
I doubt this is true. I doubt that it could be a mobile hybrid and still be strong enough to run VR. At least the VR that the twins will be doing.

Shrugs, could be cheap-ish VR with some kind of toy-like gimmick attached to it.
The Samsung Gear VR is only $100 if you have a Samsung phone, if NX has an LCD display as one of its components, it's possible they might be doing something similar.
