A perfect example of why you don't let Art directors or developers make marketing decisions (and of course vice versa).

Every canceled game is incredible.
But we can trust Lionhead, they always deliver on all of their hype.

Like I said. Gamers/consumers aren't the ones who care about this stuff. It's marketing/"suits" who's job it is to take the risk out of anything that object to anything. The funny thing is a large portion of the gaming community I'm pretty sure is black/latino/asian and most of the white audience is cool with anyone on the cover. Just make a good freaking game. "I was going to buy that game, but this one has a white person on the cover so I'll buy this one" .... said no gamer ever, and if there was one he/she is just an asshole that's a tiny, tiny, tiny minority. |
If they don't care then what is this

or this

Just a frigging shopkeeper in the game.
This decision was made in 2009, at least things are getting a bit more progressive nowadays. Yet still a long what to go until all gamers don't care.
Dragon Age: Inquisition got the cover right. Could be anyone on the cover, even a black transgender muslim refugee inside that armor. Plus it has the word Dragon in the title, win win.
MS PR wanted a white person. The dev wanted a black person and both though it has to be like that. So, why is one worse as the other? Both were thinking that it has to be a specific race.
And this
"And you want a black woman".
"And I was like, yes, I do, because it's about be whatever hero you want"
is pretty dumb though. How does a black female person show me more that I can be whoever I want as a white guy shows me this. Maybe the dev thinks more in races as everyone else does lol. He seemed to be the one who desperately wanted someone not white and this is better how exactly? He even screamed because he didn't get the black one on the cover? Common...
I love how people here assume they know better than people who have been been working on marketing for ages and have tons of experience in the field.
'If I don't have a problem with a black woman on the cover, no ones does, so these marketing people are stupid'. Yeah, as if.
The "suits" clearly could be wrong and have been several times, but it's far more likely they know what they're talking about. So far two examples have been provided to prove them wrong, one of a game with a popular character from the biggest tv show currently on tv (maybe even worldwide), a game the sales of which we don't know. And another that I'm seeing posted for the first time, unlike covers with dragons that I see posted all the time as some of the greatest ever.

Interesting how so many people seem so against censorship in games in any form and tout the whole "artistic freedom" bit, yet when it's an issue like this, it becomes "understandable" because of "marketing".
This is why there is a lack of fresh new games and innovation.
I suspect it is not just at Microsoft, probably happening at other major publishers.
What the eff, let the creators effing create.
as bad as this sounds...
...there aren't a lot of black female gamers compared to white male gamers. marketing has a valid point here. is it racist and sexist to not want to market a product with blacks or women? absolutely. but the market is made of of racist and sexist people. it sucks but i don't think disney or ms is obligated to risk their profits to try and change the world.

It's only bad when boobiez are censored/altered.
Peter Molyneux departure was a big loss to the studio and probably the real reason fable is dead.
