"Handheld" can be a pretty loose term, an iPad is a handheld device technically, we could see some very different form factors for mobile NX units.

If I've learned anything about Nintendo, is that everything is possible, both the good and the bad things. But, is it likely/probable? My guess is not.
Please excuse my bad English.
Former gaming PC: i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070
Current gaming PC: R5-7600, 32GB RAM 6000MT/s (CL30) and a RX 9060XT 16GB

The size of Nintendo's handhelds has been very similar. I agree that we could see something bigger in the future, specially if it needs power to follow up the home console. I think the standard size next handheld will be bigger than the 3DS XL.
AMD APU is an obvious cost effective choice, 14nm too, and a mid-low end Polaris GPU in that APU could be a slightly more expensive choice at first, but more cost effective later and giving NX more longevity, so more sales.
The only part I doubt about is Zen, if the rumours are true, NX would use ARM, so either an AMD K12 ARM CPU or a third party licensed one.
An APU with Polaris GPU and ARM CPU would be very cost effective, and, thanks to using one of the latest ARM implementations, smaller, cheaper and less power-hungry than a x86-based one with the same raw performances and same production process.

x86 is hardly usable in ultra mobile devices like phones, you ask Intel about their experiences in dethroning ARM thus far ... |
Rubbing salt into Intel's wound, you're doing it right.
I think NX is not HC and HH... NX is a family of products with the same OS...
In march, NX will be a HC et will be sold with stationary part for home.
This second part will be a small server, have DD for storage, have a CPU like opteron for multiplayers games and use hdmi to play with HC NX on TV
At the end of 2017, Nintendo will selling a 3rd part, the HH whose connecte on the server and will have only CPU, GPU, RAM..
So NX HC will have ARM processor, probably a GPU Mali, and his server use opteron x1150 or x2150 or opteron Seattle if it's an ARM processor... Have to be sold 250/300$...
The HH will coming november / december 2017 with X86 CPU and big GPU and good RAM with the same price 250/300$...
Nintendo will selling as well, a bundle HC + HH 400 / 500 $ !
I think that is why rumors going everywhere, the NX is two différentes machines, and leaks speak about two différentes machines
NX is so confusing at the moment. Is Nintendo going for something crazy? Or is the home console going to be a normal console (finally!!)? To tell the truth, if I was designing a console at this point, I'd go with a mid-low end Zen/Polaris APU for futureproofing. We see what's going on with PS4. It's so young yet already getting a boost. I think that if NX is less powerful than PS4 Neo (let alone regular PS4), it's going to be a Wii U 2. I mean, 3rd parties won't even bother - I wouldn't. No gamer is going to care about the worst versions of games. And great exclusives? Sure, but how far can that take you? 15-20 mil? Xbone is slightly less powerful than PS4, yet the small difference turns into a massive mindshare and sales difference. A weak NX would suffer from the same thing.
I think it's time to go big or go home for Nintendo. And the time for doing so is perfect, since competition has its hands tied by previous designs, while N can take advantage of newest tech that isn't more expensive this time! A good modern 14 nm APU, 12 GB of RAM and they are in for the kill. And if they can offer the best multiplats in the business, people will actually care about them. I so much want to see a Zen/Polaris combo, please Ninty... Repay us for what you've done this gen.
Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!
My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/
My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.
I think one of the NX models or maybe the intial model itself is going to be a mobile console. Look at what AMD says about the Polaris 14nm architecture:
Polaris, at least the initial ones, will be aimed at laptops and low-power consumption tasks. AMD said it should enable performance-levels in thin-and-light laptops that have been unheard of before.
That sounds like something that could function in maybe not a DS-type handheld (maybe this is why Nintendo is keeping the 3DS around longer), but a mobile console or tablet sized device?
EDIT: More from AMD
"This advancement has led AMD to see Polaris enabling "incredible form factors", teasing that "this is just the beginning" with performance per watt optimizations to continue."
AMD is claiming the Polaris 11 allows for console-quality graphics (likely referencing the PS4 here) in ultra thin lap top designs.
Well I mean in terms of actual volume, the Wii U tablet is actually larger than many thin laptops. So imagine a console the size of a Wii U tablet (sexier looking hopefully) that you can just pick up and move around the house or take outside of the house. You can buy a battery pack for it and it's a portable "game station". It can stream not only to nearby TVs but perhaps also to tablets or phones.
When you bring it home you can dock it to a home dock (supplemental compute device) that increases performance even further. Does that sound like a "new concept"? Can't do that with your PS4. It wouldn't be earth shattering per se like the Wiimote was but it's something new at least.
Interestingly it looks like Polaris might be delayed into October, they are having production issues, *if* Nintendo is using Polaris-derived tech, perhaps that contributed to the delay of the NX? Kimishima said software was only one of the reasons NX was launching in March, not the only reason.
