Forums - Nintendo - Do you think Nintendo's holding off of officially revealing NX ultimately helpful or hurtful to Nintendo?

Is waiting past E3 to reveal NX a good thing for Nintendo?

I think its a good thing. More attention to themselves, no attention being drawn away towards PS4.5 or the 100s of games at E3. Gives them time to prepare fully as I presume they are not.

In terms of damage to their brand, its been done already, for like the past 4 years. Skipping E3 this year won't do them much more harm, especially since Zelda U alone is bigger than all of the E3 games they had playable last year combined.

Either way the difference is negligable.

"We have discussed several times whether or not the product NEEDS to be revealed more than 6+ months before release, with people being on both sides."

So you start with that statement and yet you want another discussion on this dead beat horse lol.

Long term? Makes no difference. It's annoying for now though.

We have discussed several times whether or not the product NEEDS to be revealed more than 6+ months before release, with people being on both sides. I personally believe that it would only benefit them by revealing it earlier and having more time for the hype to steamroll and if the product is actually good interest in the product would not fall off, but that is only a part of what this post is about.

What this is about is do you think it is a good idea to have the Nintendo brand basically stagnate for 2 years, or should they just announce the NX and some games already? When should they have announced it? How should this year actually have looked as far as marketing for Nintendo?

Keep in mind in this discussion I only want to look at how you here see their marketing. If we could avoid things like "they should have released NX winter of this year" out of here, that would be fantastic. I just want to know if you think Nintendo are being smart in their marketing, or is it technically worse than the Wii U at this point.

Me personally:

I think it's a terrible idea for Nintendo to have their brand stagnate for two years. No one is going to be really looking at the WIi U version of Zelda U when they will most likely be more interested in what the NX version looks like.

They should have officially shown it, had it's name out at least by early June, had all E3 to destroy the competition with the shear amount of 1st party games they got coming to it (I mean, we haven't got a big budget game since 2014), throw in some third party, and just have E3 be this big blowout of TONS of titles easing peoples minds of how little their was on the WIi U.

I personally also think the stagnation is only hurting Nintendo. I don't think skipping E3 is doing them any favors, and in fact think it will overall hurt them.

I was hoping for a kind of "new" Nintendo mentality with the NX, but it looks like that won't happen.

I warned you guys this was going to be the net result, even if NX was 2017, Nintendo was done with Wii U so all you were going to get is a "stagnation period" of nothing.

To make a 2016 or 2017 launch, it means all major development would have to have shifted to the NX by 2014/early 2015.

The amount of time it's stagnated is not okay. If they hadn't mentioned the system YEARS ago, I'd be more inclined to believe that a reveal shortly after E3 wouldn't be so bad. But we've been sitting here twiddling our thumbs for too long, and things at Nintendo are in bad shape. They need to do all they can to bring the hype, and they need to do it NOW. No more waiting, no more secrets.

years? its been one year.

I'm acknowledging this has already been dealt with. Not mentioning will only have people use this over and over and over in this thread.

It is indeed a dead horse subject.

Years ago? What are you talking about? NX was first mentioned in March of last year. Even when they did mention it, they had very little choice. They had announced their their mobile initiative at the same time and had they mentioned mobile without mentioning their future console plans, that would have led to speculation that Nintendo was discontinuing Wii U and 3DS.

With as many development teams as they have (or hell, outsourcing is a thing) this is not an excuse at all. There should be SOMETHING new in the 10 months before the NX.

If they are not ready, then they are not ready. What's best is for them to release the console when it is ready and has a steady stream of content, that way they do not repeat their mistakes with the Wii U.

Kimishima seems to be aware that rushing the launch and having a poor lineup will hurt them more than a slight delay.

It will be in our homes in less than a year. "It's not ready" is not the problem.

Games have been in development since 2014 for some of their developers, so software isn't available to show doesn't cut it either.

Appsolutely. It wouldnt be good move to reveal NX at E3 with all that other huge news like VR, PS4.5, new Xbox, other huge games...
IMO best way is to reveal NX sometime after E3 at separate event where they will have all attention and all time only for itself, same like PS/MS done with PS4/XB1.
Today there is no need to reveal your console (or any other technical device) year and half earlier before launch, you can revile just 6 months earlier make huge hype and great marketing that will lead to good launch.
