That's because starter Pokémon in general are all lame. Stop using them. They are not special. They're just training wheels for new trainers who don't know how to use Pokémon types yet. I genuinely cannot understand how someone can unironically say that. It literally has the most different visual design of any Pokemon game ever made. It's like looking at the jump from FF9 to FF10 and saying "hur-dur same game new title." This isn't even opinion. This is factually the most different Pokemon has ever looked between two games. SM's overworld looks like XY/ORAS's cutscenes.

I chuck mine asap. Starters are worse than HM slaves. They take up a slot your team because gamefreak likes to assume that no one has ever touched a Pokemon game in their lives, as if it wasn't the second biggest gaming franchise on the planet.

When I was in like 5 or 6th grade there was this kid that would only use his starter throughout the whole game and it annoyed the crap out of me XD.

Because people dont have good taste like you and I. People always underestimate the water starters but once they hit their 3rd form people realize the mistake they made making fun of them. Case and point: Oshawott, Froakie, and now Popplio

Well I don't apply.

I thought Oshawott was meh, and I think Samurott is meh.
I thought Froakie looked promising, and I think Greninja is awesome.
I think Popplio is crap, and I'm pretty sure it won't be much better in the end.

Popplio waill be badass in his third form <3 just you wait

I do think it might improve a lot with evolutions, but only enough to become meh as a Samurott.

If that were true, there'd be no such thing as starters, and you'd be able to start with whatever base level Pokemon you want instead of between only three generic training wheel Pokemon soley created to teach you how to play rock-paper-scissors.

But it's not true. It's not about having a heart. It's about catering to the lowest common denominator. It's why gym leaders and the Elite 4 are still a mandatory part of every campaign. It's literally gaming's most obnoxiously overbearing tutorial.

Of course I do.

It's a simple Pokemon I'd never use, but to each their own.
