Forums - Gaming - Valve, what could they possibly be doing in their offices right now?

Well, Gabe has worked on many MS products, and it's not a really a new OS, but modifying Linux to what they want for it.  So far, even their own games like Left for Dead, haven't run as well as other platforms yet.  They still have their work cut out for them.

I think they will launch something like Half Life 3 as a SteamOS only if they can get it run decently.

And if we go with that example of having worked on something ebfore, MS has done the same when it comes to DX and look at how 12 is (not) working out. Again these things take time and if we're more than willing to give MS the benefit of the doubt when it comes to UWP, DX 12, W10 then I'm sure we could do the same for a single OS from Valve.

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

Well, if we compair apples to apple DirectX 12 offers at least a 20% improvement over DX11, and sometimes a 300% improvement.  At best SteamOS hasn't been able to achieve anythign beter than 20% worse, on their own games, yet.  So even at the best case senario it's has a long way to go.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Both still have a ways to go and then of course there is Vulkan in the race as well.

I think Gabe is probably eating a kebab and browsing the web.

SteamOS will never be a *thing*.
One of the biggest selling points to gaming on PC is... Well. The Games. It's the platform with the most games. Literally no other platform, not even mobile comes anywhere near it in sheer volume.

I think SteamOS was always more of a side project at Valve anyway, would have made more sense for them to throw their support behind Android if they were truly serious about an alternative to Windows.

Making sure Steam doesn't go down and counting money.

Maybe they are trying a last ditch effort to convince NIntendo to make the NX a steambox.

That may turn out to be true.  But Gabe still seems really angry at Microsoft, and while it's customres use Windows more than the average population, he still wants to make an alternative.

Either way, Windows get better, or SteamOS gets to be better, we win with more powerful tools for developers to make more powerful games.  That they haven't gotten very far yet shows to me that Mircosoft, for all the hate they get, really does pump out some good products.

Why should they do anything? What challenges them to get creative?
