Well, if we compair apples to apple DirectX 12 offers at least a 20% improvement over DX11, and sometimes a 300% improvement.  At best SteamOS hasn't been able to achieve anythign beter than 20% worse, on their own games, yet.  So even at the best case senario it's has a long way to go.

SteamOS will never be a *thing*.
One of the biggest selling points to gaming on PC is... Well. The Games. It's the platform with the most games. Literally no other platform, not even mobile comes anywhere near it in sheer volume.

I think SteamOS was always more of a side project at Valve anyway, would have made more sense for them to throw their support behind Android if they were truly serious about an alternative to Windows.
