Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.  I don't believe the Nintendo NX rumours, since launching a much more powerful console would make it much more expensive than the PS4 / XBox One, and with them having a 60+ million install base, the NX would be dead on arrival.  Sony makes next to nothing from the console sale, so unless you start buying 2 of each game (one for each of your consoles), Sony would just lose money.  You have a good point about VR, as a more powerful console would help it against the Rift and the Vive, but in my opinion that is still not worth it.

It honestly costs sony nothing, and instead costs the developer time. However, as almost all games coming to PS4 also come to PC -- it does not cost them much. They simply take some of the enhanced PC features and add it to the baseline PS4 version, up the resolution/framerate and call it a day.

It costs Sony money to develop / test / certify new hardware.  Although I don't know what that amout is, I am assuming it is a lot more than "nothing".  I totally agree that if they did this, and developers took advantage of it, that these enhanced games would be better.  But I don't see how this would help them sell more games.  They are already beating Xbox and Wii U, and I don't hear people saying that they're holding out on buying a PS4 until it gets more powerful.  The people that really care about framerate and resolution already have PCs that can run those games in 1440p or even 4K.

Someone please explain to me why Sony would spend time and money to develop a slightly faster console? How would any of this benefit Sony?

Forward thinking is releasing a ps5 for Christmas 2017, and saying ps5 can play ps4 games, and ps4 can play ps5 games but at reduced settings.

Ps4.5 neo if true as written, is a big big mistake.

ROFL dude --

How is this any fucking different other than name? PS4 can play PS4.5, and PS4.5 can play PS4 games.
Guess what -- the PS4 just runs it at reduced settings.

Lol I have to laugh and say on the surface yes, I was actually imaging this ps4.5/ps4k/ps5 or whatever the next Playstation would be called to be an actual BIGGER upgrade in hardware, not just a minor upgrade thats only meant to last 1-2 years on the market.

How long is this ps4.5 meant to be sonys top console? How far off is the ps5 then? 3 years away?

I think if Neo makes the psvr run better than vs ps4 is also would be an issue. Something this leak doesn't mention.

If neos abilities can't be used for anything but increased resolutions above 1080p then it's not an issue.

I dont understand how my point is not understood.

When 100 million users have the same machine, and im talking about THE SAME machine, the developers dont have to worry about numbers. They have a standard devicer to program for.

If you add to the equation, 2 or more skus the problems will star happening.

Where are we living? In LaLa Land? We are well aware of the issues that we have been getting lately with the performace of games, this will make things worse.

I play on consoles because of the simplicity, for me and the developers.

I dont want to game on the PC because i dont want to worry about specs.

I have downloaded patches this gen that weigh the same as the fucking game, im not being a half empty kind of guy, im just being realistic.

This WILL make things worse.

The idea is stupid and i hope it stays as a rumor.

No one is saying that it won't negatively effect PS4 owners. Obviously it will.

But it definitely won't negatively effect sales.

How are you so sure? If the PS4 is always used as the base console, how would it be any different from what PS4 owners experience right now? And why wouldn't they do that? Why would they ignore 40+ million users? Do you really think they would be so stupid to do that?

"There is only one race, the pathetic begging race"

Imagine for one second that this becomes the norm.

Allright, so we will have a PS4, a PS4 NEO, Xbox One, Xbox One and Half, NX, Super NX, PC.

So, before all of this a developer had to make a game with 3 or 4 platforms in mind.

Now, they will have to optimize their game for 6 or 7 platforms, because it is established that there will be no exclusives for a certain SKU.

Can you imagine the next Ubisoft game, lets say Watch Dogs 2? Or the next EA game?

You know DAMN WELL that some group will be fucked for sure.

Not only that, developers will have to create different patches for different SKUs.

This will be in my opinion a fucking disaster.

The people telling me that i should buy a PC because im worrying about framerates, ironically are the ones who are packing their already owned PS4s to cash them in the nearest Gamestops for credit for a newer PS4 with better graphics

Im perfectly content with my PS4 guys

Digital Foundry is gonna get really embarrassing for Microsoft.

Unless MS releases an even better upgraded console...

If Sony really does this than I imagine MS will follow suit.

Except they also have to worry about the XBO, how would that be different?

LOL, do you think the PS4.5 is a brand new console? Do you think it will be different to develop for than the PS4? All they did was change the graphics options. That does nothing, all they would have to do would be increase the graphics from the regular PS4. All they would do is increase frame rate from the regular PS4 version or include more AA etc. Why do you think that would be hard lol? There is nothing difficult about that.

Do you even know what you are talking about when you talk about PC gaming? How would you have to worry about the specs for the PS4 and PS4.5, LOL there are only two options, one will have better frame rate. How would that complicate anything?

The iPhone 6 was a complete redesign over the previous iPhone, which is more like the release of a new generation of consoles.  The iPhone 6S is basically a faster version of the iPhone 6, which is more like the PS4.5 that we are debating here.  And how did Apple do with the iPhone 6S?  Not as good as the iPhone 6 launch.

Still too slow to emulate the ps3....

Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 need roughly similar hardware to be Emulated on the PC.
Now if the Xbox One can emulate the Xbox 360................................................. You do the math.

Still seems too weak for the rumored 4K game playback. I still believe it's the slim and it'll mostly be for movies and run a bit cooler.

Agreed. Doesn't have enough bandwidth, CU's, CPU speed for 4k games whilst maintaining a degree of image quality.
For 4k media or simpler casual games it would be fine, but if you are expecting Uncharted in 4k on such anemic hardware... You will be sadly dissapointed.

The GPU would be around the level of a single Radeon 7970/280X/380X. - I.E. It struggles to achieve 30fps in Battlefield 4 at 4k, 1440P on the other hand would be a perfectly viable target IMHO.
