Amiibo gets +1 for being a cool little figurine, but other than that they are equal in my eyes. Disc based DLCs are becoming more and more scarce these days however.

Nope, infact they've only been getting worse.

That's not true. E3 2014 trailer. Video gameplay demo.
Anyway, I don't mind amiibo. As long as the features are nice little bonuses and not critical features, I honestly don't care if things get "locked" behind different amiibo. I have three so far, one of which I got as part of a bundle (Mario, via Mario Party 10, which I got at a clearance price from a place that was no longer going to stock video games), one that I got because I wanted that amiibo and the content it unlocks (Link), and one because it was cheap and I figured I might as well (Luigi). I also bought the Rosalina+Luma amiibo for my niece.
I honestly don't see the problem with things like the Ganondorf amiibo having a quick-to-program, minor feature that lets you make Twilight Princess harder... those suggesting it was somehow a major feature being locked away are kidding themselves. In most cases, amiibo-locked features are afterthoughts - added to a game specifically because of amiibo, and they wouldn't exist if not for the amiibo. If not for amiibo, there would be no second cave of ordeals, no extra-hard-mode in Twilight Princess. There would be no spinner weapon (that was clearly inspired by the similarity with amiibo) for Hyrule Warriors, there would be no character-based board setup in Mario Party 10, there would be no special features in Star Fox Zero.
And Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival wasn't a title that displaced a real Animal Crossing title - no rational person would think that Nintendo would cease work on a real Animal Crossing for a spinoff, considering likely sales numbers for each. The real game has been in development at least since early 2013 (thus the Wii U app thing), and is either in final preparations for release on Wii U some time in the next year or so (if NX Console doesn't release until end of 2017) or has been moved over to NX. ACAF almost certainly exists as a stopgap because they wanted AC:WiiU out by now and had to delay it.
The funny thing is that people seem to get off on complaining both ways at once - amiibo has too much functionality, and too little functionality. It's locking of significant DLC behind physical purchases, and there's not enough value to them to buy them. When they're nothing more than unlocks for costumes or other such cosmetic fluff, they complain that owning the amiibo doesn't really contribute anything to the game. When they're unlocks of little bonus features that add a little bit of extra functionality to the game, they complain that it's glorified DLC. And then when it's a function that requires some way to move data from one place to another, they complain about adding more layers of interaction between games ("you have to own TP HD and the wolf amiibo to unlock things in Zelda U - how unfair!").
Ultimately, I think that the "amiibo haters" are actually people who are conflicted, because they know that they're likely to buy a heap of them if they allow themselves to do so. They want all of those extra functionalities, but just can't bring themselves to pay for the amiibos because if they buy one, they're probably going to buy them all. These things are generally far greater value than any of the other "toys to life" systems because they're designed to be useful across a variety of games and are more than just something you need to put on a device when you want to use the character in the game.
Also note that a lot of amiibo functions can be triggered by a single touch, once, and amiibos don't remember if they've been used before for these sorts of unlocks. You can use one Link amiibo, for instance, to unlock the Link Mii outfit in Mario Kart 8 on as many systems as you want.
No, my opinion hasn't changed. I've always been mostly indifferent towards them but lean more towards a positive view. I have about ten of them and the "DLC" they unlock is mostly trivial and doesn't really affect any of the games I play, so most of the time I don't even care.

Didn't care for them when they came out, still don't care for them, and now they actually stop me from buying Nintendo games because I can't help but wonder what content might be locked away behind them and I know I'll never own one.
I don't like them, but i like them. :p
To explain, i don't like it that they withold DLC with them. Said DLC should be availabe through normal means.
I recently got the Ike amiibo for FE fates DLC... but the thing is, i like the figurines. It's cool to have this toy figure of your favorite gaming characters and for them to be more than just a figurine for display.
So... yeah, there you go. I think i might end up getting more. :( Just the fire emblem ones though.
My opinion hasn't change on them, which is that I don't really care about them at all.

I do feel they are starting to get out of hand with the things tied to them, but I still like the idea that characters I like have and could be released as figurines that I can get and display on a shelf, especially niche characters that would likely never get the chance otherwise.

Nope.
I've disliked them from the beginning, and this dislike has only grown since then.
I like them when they're used well. No dlc should be locked inside the figurine.... Except cosmetic crap that doesn't impact gameplay or functionality of said game.
