Forums - Sony - Why a PS4k is not necessarily bad for current PS4 owners

Current PS4K rumours have been received with mixed emotions to say the least. The biggest reason given by many that would not be happy with a PS4K is that they would feel ripped of if they hade to pay another $400 after just three years. However this is not the case:

Scenario without a PS4K: You bought a PS4 for $400, and after six years you sell it for $100. This would have cost you $300 after six years.

Scenario with a PS4K: You bought a PS4 for $400, and after three years you sell it for atleast $200. You then buy a PS4K. This you sell after another three years for atleast $200. This will have cost you $400 after six years.

Total premium for a PS4K: $100. Also note that $200 for PS4 after three years is a very low estimate, you would likely get a bit more(same for the PS4K). So it could be as little as $50 or perhaps even less. Now for that moneyis assume you would atleast get: PS4 games at a higher frame rate/resolution, 4K support/HDR support and probably a 4K Blu-Ray player, a much better PS VR experience(probably any PS4 game at 60 fps) etc. Also if you currently own a 500 gb PS4 you would double your storage capacity.

Looking at it this way it would almost be a rip off from Sony to NOT release an upgraded system.

PS4K won't be 400$ that's for sure.

Even if all it does is play 4K Blu-ray's.

No matter how you look at the PS4K, it's a bad thing. If all that it does is play 4K Blu-ray, then I suppose it's not a big deal. However if there is any difference in power, then that sucks a lot.

Firstly, the constant trading in and upgrading that you're proposing makes it sound like the mobile phone business which IMO is a total shitfest. Going down that route and it won't be long until the pricing is the same. PS5 at $2000 dollars unless you get a monthly subscription or some stupid shit like that? No thanks.

Secondly, that's a very dodgy conclusion you have there that I don't agree with in the slightest. While I would agree with the thread title that it's not necessarily a bad thing, trying to argue that it's a good thing instead? Nah, not fooling for that.

Although I agree that a business model like that of smartphones would be terrible, having to wait six years for a new model smartphone would probably be even worse. That would be like going from the first Galaxy S to an Galaxy S7 in one go. Why not atleast something like a Galaxy S3/S4 iafter three years, especially if that first Galaxy S would receive new software and updates for a total of six years?

Also with or without a PS4k, a PS4 would be worth roughly the same after six years. So why not offer the option?

I think upgradable consoles seems like a good concept too. It will just depend on how it's done. I don't think ps4k will be $400 or be able to play 4k games though. We'll have to be patient.

I disagree. No matter how you look at it (objectively)  it's a good thing.

There's an elective purchase that I CAN make for upgraded visuals. However, if I choose not to,  I'm guaranteed the same games as before.

What if all the games are the same but just are scaled up/down? More like the pc market?

its bad for them because they cant afford it or at least in their mindset/lifestyle they think that way. People upgrade phones every year or make all these crazy expensive subscriptions to get them.

This is a huge boon for PS4 owners if their PS4 games are enabled to be upgraded in graphics like you would have a Remaster but it will be for free.

yes it will be 400-500

I don't really get the reason for it. The regular PS4 is selling like crazy.
