I don't even have a 4K TV, so it is pointless to get one.

Once SCE releases an official statement on the PS4.5/K, it should make the decision much clearer as there is currently too much disinformation and theories as to what it will be.

The product market will effectively be determined by price, which in turn will determine the specs, depending on what type of OEM components that MSRP can pay for on a manufacturer's level.

If SCE sells a $600 PS4, most of the consumer market will say that SCE has flipped its lid after winning the 8th gen with a $400 entry price back in 2013.

Granted, there is a much smaller market for a $600 spec PS4, that still wouldn't match a $900 DIY gaming PC build (props to SCE if they could and still sell these boxes at a near loss/even break), but clearly there are some who want to see a high end PS4. I just don't think there's a 40m market for one.

If SCE goes the more likely route and releases a $400 updated SKU, we'll see a much more conservative approach to the hardware updates. Granted, A $400 MSRP buys much better OEM components, performance wise, in 2016 than it did in 2013, but we wouldn't be seeing dedicated (current) gaming PC level hardware performance.

Said $400 updated console would see better performance for all existing PS4 software across the board, as well as smoother performance for PS VR play, in addition to the 4K video play back, which really only becomes a marketing bullet once 4k displays reach a certain level of market penetration. Some estimates have market share approaching 23% in 2016, spurred by a wide offering of sub $1000 choices.

If that revolutionary? Clearly no, but then this isn't being marketed as a new platform or replacement for the existing PS4. I'm guessing that all software will continue to have to run on the 2013 PS4 specs to avoid that split in the market so many critics are harping about.

Scenario three is that SCE sells a $500 PS4 with slighter better specs than would be possible at a $400 price point, which in my opinion, really isn't going to offer a much better device without cutting the size of the potential market for the new PS4 to below mass consumer levels.

But who knows? Maybe the PS brand has been so reinvigorated by the success of the PS4 that the market will forget that a large part of the reason for the initial appeal of the PS4 was its very accessible $400 MSRP.

Nope. Launch day PS4 owner.

Platinums: Red Dead Redemption, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, Terminator Salvation, Uncharted 1, inFamous Second Son, Rocket League

The PS4.5 will be a good opportunity for me to get a PS4. When everyone goes in to trade their old PS4 in, the price of the old console could plummet. Was waiting to get one for $200, and looks like it could be a LOT sooner than later.

I think Oculous will drop price near the holidays to be competitive with PSVR. I do believe Sony and Facebook made a deal for Sony to hold off until October. Vive might even get to around 600 by then also and have a bundle with the touch controls. VR will be priced for the people who need everything as soon as they can get it and have more money than sense. I think Oculous could hit 500 easily but investors and all that bulls hit,  quick returns or its not worth it to them.

What's the point in dropping the price if they can't even meet the demand yet? Aren't all the pre-orders for both sold out for months in advance?
Why would Sony make that deal? They can't produce the thing fast enough either, it's a different market, totally pointless deal.
Occulus is not a platform (yet) so yes ofcourse they need returns on the hardware.

I believe that version will suffer too. Developers still need to test and make sure the game runs on the new system with different hardware specs. Yet the sales expectations are exactly the same, hence that extra cost comes out of the overall budget. Thus I expect less specific optimizations overall, even though they'll spend the lion share of their time on the current system. It's more work for developers for no extra gain.
In the best case scenario games will run exactly the same on the ps4.5 (if you can ignore the extra resources) so developers can fully concentrate on the current version. Which means only a few first party exclusives will actually use the extra power.

Just like developers do on the PC today they will do with upgraded consoles.  Its not like the developers have to test a 10 different iterations of a console so the time testing mid gen console would be small.  The base unit would always be the current system and the mid gen would be tested for compatibility more than anything else.  I highly doubt that Sony will change the actual parts to the latest chipsets but instead just make the current parts faster.  So what you will probably get as we see today is a locked frame rate for all consoles no matter what upgraded hardware was introduced or developers will detect the console and lock its settings.

Pfff nope.

Already preordered. Every tiny inch the PS4 can come closer to a PC is worth buying.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

I'll probably leave PS4 to my my little brother and get a PS4K when i move out.

So hard to say at this point without a BoM break down for any of these devices, but I think it's pretty clear that Oculus/FB and HTC know they're pushing a higher premium product than SCE.

From the consumer perspective, one can tell simply by the hardware specs that it's not a case of SCE simply charging less for their VR hardware set, without even looking at the base hardware required on which to run it.

But even at $500, which is also the real price of PS VR with the input peripheral bundle (only a small percentage of the buyers will already have a pair of Move wands and the PS4 camera), it's not the easiest sell if they're looking to hit XB360 Kinect levels of sales, much less exceed them.

SCE does have the advantage of selling a peripheral/set for their own platform and hardware. Oculus and HTC don't benefit from the sale of PCs, PC components, etc. I am unclear as to what type of licensing fees they're receiving, if any, for games developed for their peripherals.

All that said, it still goes back to the BoM on these VR sets, so I'm looking forward to seeing tear downs and estimates.
