I think a key question is what does the game alone come with? The title of your thread says hardcore mode is locked behind an Amiibo but the Amiibo when scanned didn't unlock any mode, it unlocked an Arwing. It may be the case that there exists a hardcore mode completely independent from any Amiibo functionality.

The title of this thread is misleading: the Falco Amiibo doesn't unlock a mode, it unlocks an arwing.

The Black Arwing is the "hardcore mode" that's been talked about where you take more damage.
