Forums - Sony - Sony: PSVR May Come To PC

ArnoldRimmer said:

Ha! I've predicted time and again that PSVR comes to PC sooner or later.

But this exceeds even my wildest dreams: I believed the way PSVR would come to PC would be by the internet community developing inofficial PC drivers for PSVR, just like they have already done for pretty much all Playstation peripherals. People constantly ridiculed this idea by claiming that SONY would do absolutely anything possible to prevent this from happening (being able to use PSVR on PC).

Quite ironic that SONY itself is now considering developing and releasing PC software for PSVR. Even I hadn't expected SONY to go this far...

I think unofficial support could be pretty hard to realize, because the software necessary to track the LED strips on the unit with a cam is not trivial to replicate and make fast/reliable enough to be useable for VR (processing the data has to fit into ~2ms afaik).

It's encouraging to hear Sony is in favor of making PSVR usable with PC, I hope official drivers release relatively quickly after it's available.

Around the Network

that would be absolutely fantastic... I know I'll get PSVR and am very interested in a VR for pc but not very keen on the current rift and vive bundles. if they make some good support on pc it's really a no brainer for me :)

Sony sells off
SOE & PC manufacturing Arm's of their company.

Now Playstation HAS

Playstation VUE works on
PS3,PS4,Amazon fire stick & player, Chromecast, iPad & iPhone through streaming. AndroidOS support soon.

Notice no PC support.
Now if you think about it why would Sony help the PC Eco system over Playstation to replace the living room playstation as a box under the TV?

If you think about it..
PC driver support for Playstation VR..which OS very of Windows OS would Sony Support? You think Windows 10?

How about windows 7 or 8.1 over windows 10?
And if they do, should this mainly be only for streaming
From playstation 4 "to" PC that has Playstation VR headset support?

I mean already Remote Play from Playstation 4 - "to" PC is in the works.

Its pretty clear, Sony is not going to replace the living Room playstation over making the Playstation your Gateway Hub for the living room, and stream from the playstation "to" other device's as playstation software & service Node's.
That way..no

Why buy a PlayStation when PC can play it all marketing could be used against Sony's marketing for the consumer to buy a playstation.
If it was only about the Money , Sony could already just make their games and Application processes for other platforms entirely.

Its about taking over the living room to be a 1st priority computer entertainment Eco system & platform for the living Room.

The reason why this would work, is because when Sony made the PS4. It was not the only thing Sony confab with developers & publishers on.

Playstation 4 drives the visual to the PlaystationVR headset.

So the PC would not have the same hardware powering the content to the playstation VR, but when you think about it would not need to do so at all. Example:

Unreal Engine 4
Unity 3D
AMD & Crytek made Liquid VR

Sony's Playstation VR on PC would be seen as just another VR HMD. Because the above tools & game engines support the Playstation VR already.. When its made for agnostic support from the get go, it would be seen as a agnostic peripheral. By a PC and the software that it defined to the HMD..the Playstation VR is just the screen to output To.

Example:

"According to a translation of a Nikkei interview with Sony's Masayasu Ito, the company is "considering plans" to let you use PlayStation VR with a PC. After all, he says, the PS4 and PCs share similar parts (namely, similar processor and graphics architectures) -- it wouldn't be a big stretch to support both."

Again note:

"There will be an "expansion into various fields," Ito says, but anything besides the PS4 is playing second fiddle right now."

if it comes to PC it'll be an epic win.

People will have the option to buy a VR headset that is more affordable

So if any thing its designed to with this move to sell the PSVR, as just another HMD for PC.
Question is what Driver support for OS's would Sony target.. Linux example steam OS, BSD, Windows 7 or 8.1, windows 10?

We know from Ito's statement its not a priority.. The PS4 is.

Did you even read my reply?.

Your case just doesnt hold ground and ill explain why.

If a person who owns a Gaming PC (Clearly the person you are talking about is a PC gamer if he doesnt already own a console) is on the fence about what VR option to pick up, they are going to go for the cheapest one thats also works on their PC since clearly this is their main gaming platform.

Even if they want to get a console at some point PSVR headset will not be one of the reasons, since VR headsets are "NOT" exclusive to Sony, and the PSVR is not the only headset being released. So then them reasons for wanting a PS4 would be exclusive games "Not" the headset since PC users have their own headsets anyway! and thats the system that has the games they want to play in VR anyways.

Am I the only one here thinking Sony will pull "A Microsoft" and release their exclusives on PC?

Especially now with the PS4 dropping to under 300$ they only make money from services and selling games, not selling hardware.

Right right. First of all, unlike the XBO, the PS4 isn't 299$, so I don't know where you got that from. Second of all, Sony themselves have stated that PS4 hardware has been profitable from launch. I suppose you know better than them?

If Sony starts releasing their games on PC, it won't be this gen.

True it would be great in the fact it would be a cheap HMD to purchase for your PC, but it would still require developers to take advantage of making software to use the Playstation VR headset. But since its viable for development with LiquidVR, and game engines of Crytek, Epic's unreal, and unity 3D I don't think there would be a problem development for the headset..

Again why would Sony do that when they can just stream from Playstation "to" other platforms which are seen by playstation as just a "playstation Node" Sony sold off SOE, and their PC manufacturing arm of the Company.

PC is not a priority for Playstation or Sony for that matter as a platform to develop for. If you notice its about stream "from" playstation or from playstation service's "to"

Why would Sony help PC take away one of playstation best talking points?
