If they beef up the specs, sooner or later there will be games exclusively for that new machine, forcing me to either miss certain games or buy new hardware. That would piss me off. If I wanted to think about hardware and upgrade every 2 or 3 years, I would just get a PC. |
the key is that what ms is doing and what i'm sure sony is doing is that games will be forward/backward compatible.
sony will mandate all games work on ps4 and ps4.5 can run the same game with higher specs. since you don't care about graphics then don't upgrade. you can still use your ps4 for at least 5 years. in another 3 years the ps5 comes out and all games are mandated to at least work on a ps4.5. plenty of games (indies espectially) will support ps4 just because they can. any hardware you buy plays all games for at least 6 years,.. developers don't have to worry about generational transitions so much,.. sony gets more money from the hardcores that just have to have the latest version every 3 years,.. games don't stagnate soo much like they tend to late gen,..
i dunno,.. i'm no an iphone 4s and it's not a big deal to me. most applications i care about still work on my phone so i don't feel the need to upgrade so saved a lot of money buy not upgrading lately. i don't see how consoles following this same business models is a bad thing because non-graphics whores will get a console that lasts even longer than the 5 year generations we are accustom to and graphics whores will have a new toy to play with every 2-3 years.
seems fine to me. the only problem i see is how does sony clearly communicate to retail consumers what the mimime required version is. on iphone it is easy because everything is digital but physical is a different beast.
