The Gameboy lastest multiple generations because its competitors couldn't find a market. The Atari Lynx, Sega Game Gear, Turbo Xpress, etc. etc. were released and failed to sell.

The fact that its competitors failed has nothing to do with why the Gameboy can be considered to have spanned multiple generations, and other consoles or handhelds aren't.
For example, going by this chart:

The PS1 is part of the fifth generation, but actually spent more time in the 6th generation. Why is that console not considered to span two generations? Also the Neo Geo Pocket Color is considered part of the 5th generation, but spend 95% of its life in the sixith generation. Why? Any why was the Dreamcast decided to be the beginning of the sixth generation, and not the release of the neo geo pocket color?
