But that's exactly my point isn't it? If this generation thing was so cut and dry, how can one device possibly span two generations? If the gameboy can span two generations, why can't other consoles?

The Gameboy lastest multiple generations because its competitors couldn't find a market. The Atari Lynx, Sega Game Gear, Turbo Xpress, etc. etc. were released and failed to sell.
