Forums - Gaming - So is the NX a new generation of console from Nintendo or a half gen upgrade?

The technology of the NX will be 4 years old and outdated at release.

So which generation is the gameboy a part of?

4th.  You do know the Gameboy was not Nintendo's first handheld, right?

No, I know all about the Game and Watch. And how can you definitively say the gameboy was part of the 4th generation, when it was released during the NES, sold all through the time the SNES generation, and most of the N64's generation as well?

You just arbitrarily decided which generation it belongs to.

No.  I didn't.  The industry did.  Which has been the accepted standards for over 30 years.

I mean if you want to tell thousands of developers, publishers, the media, etc...and the platform makers, that they are wrong, be my guest.  But don't claim that I arbitrarily decided which generation the Gameboy belongs to.

In that case, why did the industry decide it was a part of generation 4 and not generation 5 or generation 6? What criteria did they use?

Really would not bother dude. He has a way of twisting things, no matter what you say he will try and make himself right lol.

If it is not significantly more powerful than a PS4 then it is not a new generation imo.

Can we please stop with the 4.5 PS4 meme? At best it's getting 4k for netflix.

Seriously, it's so stupid, please stop.

Why would the Gameboy be part of generation 5?  Or 6?  AS for criteria, it has to do with the predecessor/successor relationship.  Just like I said before.

Gen 5 was Gameboy Color, Gameboy Pocket and Gameboy Light.

Gen 6 was Gameboy Advance.

And Rolltide, no twisting.  Saying the Gameboy is a 4th gen device is no different than saying it's a portable console.  It is what it is.  I didn't decide that.  You have Goole. Look it up. Geez.

Why wouldn't the original gameboy be a part of generation 5 or generation 6? On what grounds? Why is Gameboy pocket, and Gameboy light part of a different generation than the original gameboy? They all play the same games. The gameboy pocket is a smaller version of the original gameboy, and the gameboy light is a backlit version of the original gameboy. If those are part of seperate generations, is the PS2 slim part of a different generation than the original PS2? How about the three versions of the PS3? If they are all part of the same generation, why are those consoles part of the game, but the gameboy pocket, and gameboy light are part of different generations?

By the way, you keep talking about the video game industry as people who decide this, well, I am part of this industry. I make console video games for a living. I asked my colleagues and they all had different answers and different opinions, so whose opinion is the right one? I mean we decide this after all, right?

Personally i would say Gameboy is a dual-generation device, 4th & 5th generation.

It released in the same general timeframe as Sega Genesis & Super Nintendo and it recieved a successor around the same time that Playstation 2, Gamecube & Xbox released.

In my opinion, that is the best way to catagorize Gameboy.
