Forums - Microsoft - Remedy has replied back regarding the 720p output of Quantum Break

The funny thing is, Remedy fans and Xbox players ain't even bothered. Furthermore, that's what Xbox platform does, push gameplay boundaries. If you want tech demos choose a different platform to play.

Erased Comment.

So without going into the bush with tech lingo, the game is 720p or not?

It's up to how you interprete it. It mixes four previous 720p frames to create a new 1080p frame. So the game actually creates a native 1080p frame but it doesn't create it from the current situation. Rather, it mixes past frames to create the current frame. Is that 720p or 1080p? I honestly don't think there's a clear answer to that.

And this is most likely what we are going to see more of as developers attempt to give us a more immersive and dynamic experience in games.  The idea of "(insert number here) or bust!" is quickly becoming antiquated when you come across games like this one that look damn good artistically and yet aren't at that pure number.

"Quantum Break’s 1080p output is a temporal reconstruction from four previous 720p 4xMSAA frames. This approach gets us high pixel quality in combination with complex shading and effects, allowing us to achieve a cinematic look. However, varying sample counts between passes and temporal upscaling makes talking about resolution, as it is traditionally understood, complicated in the case of Quantum Break."

Bonus points for marketing creativity. Ready at Dawn should've used that phrasing.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Whatever it is, looks nice and I can't wait to play it xD

Yeah, 720p with Kripton tech for re scale to 1080p

In Sony We Trust!

So the question is does a final resolution figure matter anymore?

Digital Foundry said themselves they didn't know what the output resolution was. They couldn't pin it down. What they could pin down was the ambient ocollusion and shadows which we already knew were 720p native.

Now we know why Digital Foundry couldn't tell.

At the end of the day the image is clear with a purposeful film grain ( imo to tie it in better with the TV series look ). They also throw as many things at the hardware they possibly can with effects and particles. After all the game engine completely freezes time at points in the game where you can see every spark, concrete piece, explosion in suspended animation.

Ive seen this first hand and it pushes the Xbox one further than anything before it.

A true showcase in how to develop on Xbox One.

Well done Remedy.

So it's 720p with 4xMSAA?

Why couldn't they have just said it instead of saying however long ago it would be 1080p.

If it looks great it looks great the number before the 'p' doesn't matter.

No its not. That's the point. That's why Digital Foundry couldn't pin the number down of overall output resolution. Its an interesting development for console crispness.

So basically it's 720p with software upscaling and DF was correct. Unlike with killzone, which used images @ ~1000p, this game uses reconstruction from images @ 720p. That's why they have to use 4 previous images else there would be serious image quality issues. This technique also tells us why they had to limit the resolution because the Xbox one's esram size is likely too small to hold images at a higher resolution in order to do the reconstruction at high speeds. Has the esram choice finally shown to be a bad design decision? If MS had went with GDDR5 remedy might have been able to target higher resolutions & framerates.

The number before the p does matter. Imagine if they told you is was 360p people would be pissed. With that said I agree that they should have just been straight forward. Playing games like this is only going to piss people off and make them feel mislead.

Bare in mind I said the 'p' doesn't matter if the bolded is true.

Ah didn't catch that and I do agree.
