"Microsoft has screwed up its Windows Phone upgrades once again. While the software maker promised that all Lumia Windows Phone 8 devices would be upgraded to Windows 10, it's breaking that promise. Microsoft started rolling out Windows 10 Mobile to existing Lumia devices this week, and revealed that handsets like the Lumia 920 and Lumia 1020 will be stuck on Windows Phone 8. Here's the full list of officially supported Lumia devices:

  • Lumia 1520
  • Lumia 930
  • Lumia 830
  • Lumia 730
  • Lumia 735
  • Lumia 640
  • Lumia 640XL
  • Lumia 635 1GB
  • Lumia 636 1GB
  • Lumia 638 1GB
  • Lumia 540
  • Lumia 535
  • Lumia 532
  • Lumia 435
  • Lumia 430

Given the age of some Lumia phones it's not surprising Microsoft isn't supporting them, but it's also ditching the Lumia Icon and Blu's Win JR LTE. Microsoft says the Lumia Icon might still get upgraded, but that there's no second wave of Windows 10 Mobile upgrades for other devices. That means Blu's Win JR LTE is definitely off the list. You might not have heard of the Win JR LTE, but it's a handset that Microsoft has been promoting as a compatible Windows 10 device. Microsoft silently updated its Store page to remove a reference to "upgradeable to Windows 10 when available" for the Win JR LTE this week, and it has angered owners who purchased the phone and were promised the software upgrade.

Windows Phone fans aren't necessarily angry at the lack of upgrade for their chosen devices, it's more the broken promises. Windows Phone 7 handsets were never upgraded to Windows Phone 8, and Microsoft set the expectation this time that history wouldn't repeat itself. Another broken promise is bad news for a mobile operating system that is practically dead, and once again Microsoft has angered its small but loyal base of Windows Phone users."

Whilst i had one of the devices listed above that would get the upgrade before switching to an android 6 device, its understandable that people are annoyed.

This article is mis-informed.  Microsoft doesn't determine if the windoews phone gets thee upgrade, the carrier does.

Also, i have the Lumia Icon with Verizon.  To get around Verizons control, all you have to do is become a tester for Microsoft and you can download Win10 no problem.  All of the lumias can run win 10 if they want.  I have been running win10 on my ion for almost a year.

It is near the end of the end....

Just to add a little to this piece of news (avid Windows Phone fan since the WP7 days), the promise was broken partly (if not wholly) due to the poor feedback from Windows Insiders who were using W10 Mobile on those affected devices. The feedback for stability was so low that they decided not to give users of those phones the update. I think this info can be found in a tweet by Gabe Aul.

That doesn't excuse not trying to support them eventually, but it partly makes sense why they backtracked. I'm using an 830 so I'm not affected, but my partner uses a 1020 and I'm disappointed to hear this news. I wanted her to upgrade.

Edit: Here's the tweet:

 (I hope that works)

So a few things,
First MS didn't break anything there hasn't been any clear communication on the issue...
Ihave an l920 and it's running win10 right now so no promise broken here... And if anything it's qualcom's fault who stopped supporting there processor on those phone causing the HW limitation...

And beside beyond android being the most craptastic to ever walk the earth, the HW support between major release from OEMs is far shittier than the one offered by MS...
And iOS is better than android but far from flawless in performance and by far easier to asap to such a limited park of devices and at the price they sell it, it better...

But yeah I've been there too, it's cool to bash MS it's what trendy clueless pseudo nerds do... Since the 80s nothing new here...

Had a windows phone... didnt like it.
I prefer android on the phone.

Microsoft gave up on Windows mobile,. They are focusing on Android now. They are making it their primary mobile OS. You will know what I mean when your next Galaxy S comes with Cortana, BING, and Office out of the box,

If Windows 10 Mobile is as bad as the Home OS then they did us a favor.

Anyone know win 10 performance on the 930?

I'm using an old Lumia model only because it was given to me for free by a family member last year since my Moto V3 that I had for years finally kicked the bucket.

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

Kind off surprised that my low-end 635 model is on that list. Well I might just try it out before upgrading to a high-end Android phone in a short time.

This was a choice I made to try and get into Windows phones, seeing that back then I just started working in C# and decided to build some apps for it, just for fun. The problem is that the developer support on forums is minuscule for it, compared to the Java based Android and Objective-C/Swift based iOS, and MS themselves just acquired Xamarine, so the reason to stay with this under supported mobile OS is shrinking by the day.

To bad, I actually fancy the layout of the OS, and I find it far more user friendly then Android... this, this will only piss off more users I recon. And hardware manufacturers seem more agree with the general sentiment as well. Maybe if they would have bought ups a manufacturer like Xiaomi instead of Nokia, they could have churned out far more models at far lower price.

Really? I still use 8.1 at home and at work, but thus far, the small ammount of time I have spent with 10 fills me with hope. I actually had a far better first impression then with 8 or even 7. Oh well, time will tell where Microsoft will take this one in the longrun.
