In this case it doesnt relate to sales, it relates to an old term of creating a "Gold Master" which would be the disk that is used to duplicate the final copies of the game.

So you would create a final disk, send it to the manufacturer, they would then create a gold masters, which was the final disk, which you would check and confirm, which would be the one made to create the copies.

The metric for Gold/Diamond/Platinum actually varies from country to country, and entertainment industry to entertainment industry actually lol.  I went to look it up so I could put the info here, but it's not universal lol.

We are probably going to get a very large day one patch i'm afraid.
