Isn't it a bit early for this thread, I mean all we got are some anonymous so called insiders which make this claim. Considering I heard 4k and PS4 all I tought that this was a bad joke. Considerin Sony keeps quiet nor tries to derail this rumour from the Web, I think it's another attentionseeker. I mean how convinient would it be to announce PSVR and PS4.5 the same year and keep a straight face when selling PSVR to consumers with a PS4. I am sure Sony has the patents to do so, but I don't think they will.

Like I wrote in the OP.. Its Sony them self that start talking about a stronger PS4 back in 2015..

I remember how how the sales completely plummeted when the New 3DS was released. No one wanted to buy one anymore and every old 3DS owner began to loathe Nintendo and burned all their hardware and games.

Oh wait, that never happened. Wait, you say the sales even increased? Now that's weird.

But WiiU sales was hurt by the NX talk.. becourse people (at least me) wait to see what it is.. and when it comes.. So (imo) it could hurt PS4 momentum.. Not just if Sony talk more about a stronger PS4.. but also when (if) PS4.5 comes.. Some may think its better to wait for PS5

A fucking fly on someones wall would slow Wii U sales at this point.

I don't get that argument though. So what if people are holding back buying PS4s to wait for the better version? How would it hurt Sony if they don't buy the PS4 and instead the PS4.5. Not only that but everyone who was still on the fence would buy it. In the end it's great publicity and will overall increase net sales.

It's the same with NX. If anything Nintendo would be glad that Wii U sales drop because of NX, because that means there are still people who would actually buy their new console.

One of console gamings defining qualities are the long refresh cycles and benefits that come with optimization for a static platform, such as stability, support, cost saving on incremental upgrades etc. This new way of releasing products might turn a lot of gamers off.

Thats why I ask.. (think you answser No.. and that ok.. and how you see it) I could see some danger for Sony in this.. imo.. they could face bad press.. and some angry PS4 buyers.. and people holding back.. or loose fait in Sony.. Not only parents who have theire kid screaming for the new model.. but other things to.. But that is just how I see it.. No need to get defensive. :)

No it wouldn't. The internet is not real life. Everyone is out to get the best product for themselves. If there is a newer and better product it will be bought if there is money and desire for it. Which people would it turn off though? The ones who already  bought the old console? What are they gonna do? Stop buying games and quit gaming?

Bad press is unbelievably overrated. Just look at the 2 most hated and ridiculed game publishers. And now guess who is still able to announce record profits?

A PS4.5 would not hurt Sony. The only ones hurt would be people who bought the old console and can't or don't want to afford a new console. Not physically of course but their envy for everyone else will be palpable.

Recently MS also talked about it, but there is still a huge gap between talking, planning and realisation of the concept. Especially the 4k seems more like wishful thinking than actually being possible for a decent console price.

Yes for sure.. And the topic is also just about if the sony statement is more than just talk and recent roumors are right..

But what do you think.. would a PS4.5 be a good or bad idea..?

If they release a PS4.5 as a purely linear upgrade (so literally just a PS4 that plays supporting titles at better settings), then i could actually see it helping the PS4 to maintain its current momentum. Regardless to how they handle a PS4.5 though (assuming it happens at all), i think it's incredibly important they ensure its marketing message is clear. One of the biggest selling points of consoles right now is the perception that they're simple. Little good will come from giving people the impression that's no longer the case.

Alright, what I mean is, it would frustrate me personally because I just got my PS4 last Christmas and am already planning on getting PSVR.

I like gaming, but it has NEVER hypothetically cost this much before.
