Forums - Sony - Kotaku - Sources: Sony Is Working On A ‘PS4.5’

nope, an affordable 4K console isn't possible anytime soon.

also: 4K is 4x the resolution of 1080p...

I could see this revitalizeing Gamestop. Trade with the guys upgrading, Buy from the guys who are flat ass broke who can't pay for the upgrade. Either way, devs and sony wins cause more gamers, means more software to buy.

I wonder if PS+ could be use to upgrade though.

I understand that. I'm actually talking about this from a developer perspective. The same number of people are still going to buy your game whether or not they have a PS4 or a PS4.5.

So whatever console manufacturer that goes this route has two choices -  make support optional, and no one will bother because its extra work for no real extra gain in terms of sales and profits. Or, make support mandatory and drive up development costs, while maintaining the same number of sales.

It'll just look nicer on their PS4.5. That doesn't put any additional dollars in the developers pockets, leaving no incentive to support such an initiative.

Well lets say COD developer decides not to have 4K support. But Battelfield does. Lots of people are going to switch to the 4K Battlefield as the flagship military FPS.

Stuff like that will force devs hands. You can sit still, but the competetion is always hungry.

Maybe. If Battlefield has 4K support and is a turd of a game in every other way, no one is going to care about 4K support.

Also the only people that would switch would be people that A) own 4K TVs and B) own PS4.5s. Last I checked the market penetration of 4K TVs was extremely low.  It was 1% of TV sales in 2014, and might only be as high as 7-8% of sales today. That's a pretty niche market.

Now by 2020, 4K tvs are supposed to represent 50% of TVs purchased, so it would make more sense then. But that's PS5 territory, not PS4.

Seems fake, since I dont think sony would be dumb to potentially split the userbase, and not only that, it would make this new version more expensive and I dont see it having more market potential than the standard version. In the end, I just think it would burn Sony money.
I think, if this has a hint of authenticity, Kotaku may be confusing it(or the sources) with a PS4 slim version

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

As I have been trying to explain to people in the thread that "4K" is probably a misunderstanding... what they must mean is UHD (anything above 1080p but not necessarily 4k.

While it is definitely possible for some kind of upgrade to come out, this article is absolute bullshit. It seems as if it was written by someone who googled "GPU" for the fist time just before starting to write.

I wouldn't be surprised, been expecting this ever since project morpheus was announced. PS4K would be a perfect name to.

Not happening, who has 4K? Wait, no one.

There is nothing in between for TVs. It's 1080p or 4k.

Guys, guys, guys.....
Slow wayyyyyy down.

First of all I think the 4K is a misunderstanding, I am sure they just mean UHD. That isn't full 4k but beyond 1080p.

Second, of course there would be a trade-in scheme for at least 6 months where you can get the upgrade for between 150 to 200 euro. depending on the final spec.

Third..... so it's ok to upgrade your phone every year or two but 3-4 years is too soon for a console upgrade.

Fourth: I expect this PS4.5 to release just before the 5 year mark, they were saying this gen would only last 5 years anyway so.... what's the problem?

Fifth: This means PSVR will not be obsolete the minute they transition hardware. That is reassuring for buyers of the platform.

Sixth: PS4 owners wont be left too far behind, they will not be left without the capability to play the latest titles (just at 30fps etc)

Didn't realise consoles can go on contracts.
