Forums - Sony - Kotaku - Sources: Sony Is Working On A ‘PS4.5’

If you want something like that go with steam machines. The reason why I bought a PS4 is to play it's exclusives and to play the best versions of 3rd party games for consoles. I do not want to have to upgrade to keep doing that. It's why I went with home consoles and not pc or steam machines. Many others echo that line of though hence why steam machines haven't done anything to home consoles.

I don't get it, no one would be forcing you to upgrade. You're PS4 version of a game would look and play exactly the same regartless if an PS4.5 exists or not. The bottom line is we would have more choice and a more powerfull option, and Sony makes more money. The way i see it, everyone wins.

Because the PS4.5 would become the new standard for devs to devolope exclusive games/some multiplatform games for and that would make the original PS4 obsolete. Here in lies the main problems with different levels of power in hardware with the same console. If devs make games that take full advantage of the better hardware, it won't be playable or as good on the lesser version of that console. If they make games playable on both versions, the stronger version's game doesn't use it's better hardware to the fullest. This the main reason why there's console gens to begin with. It gives devs plenty of time to make as many games as possible in a gen's lifecycle and to profit from and it gives gamers plenty of time to play that gen's games and eventually gravitate towards the new gen's consoles/games.

Ultimately, a PS4.5 is just a premature PS5. Sony makes it's money in the gaming market off of software/subs/digital content and not the hardware. It has no reason to split it's userbase this early. If PS gamers wanted new hardware every 2 to 3 years, they would have went with a steam machine or more likely a PC.

Console generations are basically going to end. I've said it many times before. MS is already pursuing this and so is Sony, Nintendo also has patents for upgradable consoles.

The business is changing, you guys will need to get used to it.

I dont think it will happen. IMO this is about PS4 Slim with 4k60FPS movies.

I think that is a real possibility.  I also just read a post about Kotaku being blacklisted by Sony, which I had completely forgotten.  This could just be an effort to spread FUD, since they hate Sony.

Edit: It also makes no sense to release PS4.5 if the PS5 will be out 1-2 years after it.  That could really damper PS5 sales, as the leap would be nowhere near as large as going from PS4 to PS5.  And those who actually bought a $399+ PS4.5 will not be interested in buying a $399+ PS5 so soon.

I dont believe it, Sony is probably making the ps4 slim but I doubt it will be more powerful.

It was fun to read all the wishful thinking! Will never happen.

Why is a console cycle 6 years on average?
- The launch price of a console is justified by selling at a profit in the second half of the gen. That's when R&D costs, marketing, etc are made back, and used to fund the next version.
- The majority of the user base switches over during the second half of the gen when the machine is cheaper to make, cheaper to afford, and makes a bigger profit.
- Developers need to get used to the new hardware, they also need to invest in new game engines, then reap the benefits of experience and bigger margins in the second half of the gen which generates cash for the next transition.

Incremental hardware screws up this whole system:
- Less profit for the console manufacturer, system prices will need to be higher for all versions. Perhaps not as high as Steam boxes but definitely not $400 at launch. (or weaker hardware, also possible)
- Confusion for the customer. The majority of sales happen with the cheaper system (slim version) that can do all the main system can do. Now you have a new system back at launch price and an affordable yet not so attractive lesser system. Not to mention risking pissing off your early adopters.
- Developers now need to double the QA process and provide an optimized experience for multiple hardware specs, just as they get comfortable with the current system.

What does make sense is a slim ps4 with HDMI 2.0 port and HDR support for movies. A bigger HDD obviously. And maybe a version with dedicated VR port which can be bundled with a VR headset. Eliminating the need for the external box which saves money.

If this is true guess I'll only stick with PC and Nintendo from now on.

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

I've been saying this is the future in the console space for a long time because IT MAKES PERFECT SENSE.

Why, Why are people saying they don't want to buy a new console so soon?

Even if PS4.5 released this year, it doesn't mean you HAVE TO BUY it or your PS4 would stop working.

Seriously, think about it.

Game development is so expensive today that the only realistical scenario is where most if not all the games released in the next 4-5 years will work on both PS4 and hypothetical PS4.5. So anyone who has bought PS4 does NOT NEED to buy PS4.5 to play the newest games released in the next coming years.

The old console generation model will disappear because the userbase split is way too extreme for todays game development costs. Upgrading hardware model will keep the userbase more controllable and thus decreasing game development investment risks.

Tell me the incentive for third party developers to put in the extra time, money and effort to develop for more advanced hardware when there is zero indication it will lead to increased sales. If games aren't coming out that take advantage of the new hardware, you end up in "New Nintendo 3DS land", a console that has additional processing power over its predecessor that all but one game have ever taken advantage of - because there's literally no point in putting in the extra effort. None.

I couldn't have said it better myself. You're 100% correct.

i think this would aslo benifit PC gaming if AMD can get more money to devolope and sell Higher End hadrware to comepte with Nvidia

If this is real, which it's most likely not, all it's gonna do is divide gamers. It won't be available at a reasonable price (599 US Dollars!), it won't be a significant enough jump visually (due to spiking development costs if nothing else), and it'll only piss off most of the current buyers, ESPECIALLY those few that actually buy PSVR.

Just like how Xbox One fragmented the Kinect base and the post-Kinect removal users for that graphical upgrade?

Closer to, say, mobile development where if your specs aren't up to what the developers are designing for then you're out of luck, or the DSi, or the N3DS. Now, it's not exactly like with mobile because by the time a hypothetical PS4.5 hits the developers would probably only (occasionally) add tiny graphical improvements as a bonus for upgraded users, hence the reference to the DSi and N3DS. At the very best all that can happen here is a marginally improved experience for select first party games. Most of the functionality would hopefully go to making native 60fps on all games instead of going for 4K/30. We're already at the breaking point for game budgets, so going for even more detail will only put further strain on publishers and lead to even more homogenization in our industry.

At worst Sony risks overextending their reach, which is already dangerously thin. They couldn't handle PS Eye along with PS2, nor could they reasonably handle PSP or Vita (with the noteworthy exclusives almost always being outsources to third party studios), or Move, or Wonderbook if we want to take a cheap shot. They won't be able to handle PSVR either because they're simply not big enough to cross develop effectively. Not even Nintendo is anymore. Doing this runs the risk of the bubble bursting on them like it did last time they REALLY tried milking consumer confidence.

You should check out my YouTube channel, The Golden Bolt!  I review all types of video games, both classic and modern, and I also give short flyover reviews of the free games each month on PlayStation Plus to tell you if they're worth downloading.  After all, the games may be free, but your time is valuable!

It's just a response to the coming of the mighty NX.

I know... my English sucks.
