Super_Boom is right, the anime was way too rushed. I enjoyed it but it bugged me that so much meaningful stuff was skipped. Ultimately, it made it feel a lot more shallow than the manga. I enjoyed the live action more than the anime, perhaps because it felt different enough that it was its own thing. As for the manga, I loved it up until the Reset and then ... I just stopped reading it. I think I would rather it ended around that point, as I don't have much desire to go back to it. Still, the opening arc of the Yamada-kun manga was excellent and I'm glad I read it. I read Hirunaka no Ryuusei for awhile, a long time ago. I thought the main character was great but the narrative did not hook me at all and I dropped it. I've started reading Again!!, which is kind of funny, as it was one of my first manga and one I expressly started reading because I'd just finished Yankee-kun to Megane-chan and went looking for more "delinquent" manga. I enjoyed it quite a bit but then it didn't get updated for a long time and I forgot about it. It sounds kind of typical in description but I liked it quite a bit, at least as far as I've read. I'm starting over again now. It's about a boy who reached high school graduation without ever making a single friend. He was from out of town and had a scary appearance. His big regret was that he never spoke with the person who had the biggest impact on him, the girl who was the only member of the Cheer Club (not Cheerleaders, but the (usually) guys who used to yell and lead chants). She was loud and odd looking and people made fun of her but she struck a chord in him. Unfortunately, that never happened and his life only went downhill from there. Now, though, he ends up in an accident and finds himself once more at his high school entrance ceremony. There are some more twists than that and it's also not only about fixing his life but I don't want to give more away.

I guess I'd be alright with just skipping the anime then? I have watched the live action, and while I wasn't fond of them condensing it a lot as well as changing the appearances of certain characters, but was still fun to watch and differing enough to warrant it. (It was funny seeing who Yamada had to kiss, while also feeling kinda sorry for him.. xD ) I'm certain most people would agree with you that it should have ended there at the reset. I think it would have been best too, but... I guess there's been some funny moments in it since it's continued? You're not missing much, as it just pulls conflict out of nowhere just to continue the story. I'm still with it because, why not...? I've gotten this far and am up to date. May as well stick with it to the end. (Unless it becomes something complicated like Negima)
I feel about the same with Hirunaka as well, except I stuck with it to the end... Well, it's another manga to check that I have read at least...
Again!! does sound like an interesting manga. The cheer club kinda sounds like those Ouendan groups with the guys in school uniforms, headbands and white gloves, and I dunno many manga that focus on that, if any. The story sounds kind of familiar as well. Not sure which manga thought, but it does feel like one I have read before. I'm kind of surprised it's one of your 1st manga, as I've never heard of it before and I've been reading manga for awhile too. Did you find it by chance, or was it something I somehow missed..?

Since im a shoujo fan I really liked Hirunaka no Ryuusei. The main girl did stand out for me. She was quite different tonother shoujo female leads. The 2 guys did stand out as well in my perspective. I always like some teacher romance and a guy who BLUSHES!!!!!! Thankgod the rival girl didn't went the "Fuck this bitch I want to kill her" route XD.
And Yes I did read Yamada before tha anime aired (which I did not watch, but might seach for video which shows all the kiss scenes in action XD ) The idea of it and the characters kept me soooo intrigued! I only read up to where it seem like its the halfway mark (where a "new story or arc began"). I always like these supernatural powers set in a normal environment. And this was one of the first few mangas I have read! |
Yeah, I liked the manga, but I think it was just the story I had a problem with. It felt a little weak and kind of uninteresting. I didn't really feel any attachment with Suzume and either guy, so I didn't really enjoy reading a lot of it. I loved seeing her make a lot of funny faces xD
And I feel like a lot of people dropped Yamada after that point... That's probably where it should have stopped, haha...

Dang, I haven't read any of those, and I feel terrible about it...

Alright, the OP has been changed to display the latest recommendations from me and Platina: ReLIFE and Negima. Perhaps you have heard of these, or maybe it's the 1st time you hear of them. Either way, maybe they're something you'd be interested in, or are already following. You can learn more about them from the summaries, haha.
I've read Negima myself and it was quite interesting, if you don't mind some pervy moments. It's fairly clean though. I did have problems with it later on as it just gets very wordy for me, but I enjoyed it for the most part.

I wouldn't seek the Yamada-kun anime out unless you just want to watch some anime and, even then, there is much better anime out there. The Chihayafuru anime, for example, which is just as good as the manga. The Yamada-kun anime, on the other hand, is a situation where the manga is obviously superior. The characters have no room to breathe and it hops from one plot point to the next. If you're like me and were interested in some of the side-characters, you'll be disappointed because most of the witch events get one episode before they move on.
Do you watch anime or is it just something you'll look into if you like the manga?
Yeah, Again!! is about an Ouendan club. I didn't use that word because I didn't know how many people would know it. Those groups are usually guys-only but this one has a girl as the leader, which actually is a big problem as some people don't like that fact. There are 100 chapters out now so I imagine it must have some support in Japan. It can be pretty funny, and the premise is common in Japan as they love to romanticize high school there, but Again!! feels unique to me because it can be serious at times and the main character's reget isn't just for himself but also that the Ouendan in his time had been disbanded after the squad leader failed to recruit any new members. The squad leader is a great character but she is so stubborn and set on tradition over everything that she is one of his biggest problems in trying to save the club. He's fighting her half the time, he's fighting her enemies who want the club to die, and he's also fighting all the self-doubt he had after being a loner for so long.
I think overcoming that fear of embarrassment and building enough self-confidence to stand up infront of all those people and yell at the top of your lungs, even if some people think you look dumb, is really what the manga is about. I believe that's why the squad leader cheering by herself even when she was being mocked by the whole school is why she left such an impact on the main character, as he was someone who would sit in the back of the room by himself instead.
As for the reliving high school thing, I know I've seen several other manga with the same theme but I don't remember what they were. I'm pretty sure I've even seen a live action drama about that. Oh, whoa, looking that up, I see that Again!! was made into a live action drama in 2014, which is when the manga concluded. It ran in Weekly Shōnen Magazine so that's a good amount of exposure.

Seeing as how the anime is only 12 episodes, that isn't nearly enough to cover even the 1st arc, which is already quite lengthy. I'm not even sure how they could even condense each witch into an episode. I think I'll take your word on it and just skip it. The manga and the drama are enough for me.
I don't really watch anime, but I would like to try watching some. I just finished Sword Art Online and the 2nd season. So I'm free to try something else. I'm not sure what to go to next. There's so many I've been recommended and there's just a lot to pick from, so it makes it a little hard to decide the next.
Again!! sounds like a unique manga from the sound of the summary. I don't know any manga that focuses on an Ouendan group and premise and characters sound interesting. I wanna give this manga a sample, haha.

No problem! There is one manga I am curious about, The Gamer. Is that a Korean manga? I feel like I see it in the updates list sometimes. I've been interested in checking that out.
