Forums - PC - Installing a Geforce 2 into a 1996 IBM Aptiva?

The CPU is too weak, even with a 3D accelerator or a graphics card you will only be able to play the early 3D accelerated games of 1996 and 1997 like Quake and Tomb Raider. The games of 1998 almost all require at least 200 MHz.
I had Pentium 200 with Voodoo 2 in 1998 and Unreal-Half-life-Thief ran good but not great.

Deus Ex (2000) - a game that pushes the boundaries of what the video game medium is capable of to a degree unmatched to this very day.

Oh? I thought i'm the only one rebuild vintage PC here.

What kind of games are you going to install?

I'm hoping to be able to play the first quake, doom 1 and 2, croc, tomb raider, 2D platformer, any DOS game.
But most of all, terminal velocity, fury3 and hellbender.

I tried playing Starcraft and Red Alert, but they run very choppy. I've also tried Gex and Jazz Jackrabbit 2 and they lag a lot of some reason. Maybe because I compressed everything on the ond harddrive inclusing the OS to get space (before I had gotten the new one with the 8 gig), or maybe just because the computer is old or because I need more RAM. I don't really know.

Fury 3, and heroes of might and magic 2 run flawlessly though.

SLI has existed for decades.

Still got a pair of Voodoo 2's around here somewhere! Amazing cards. I had it paired up with the S3 Virge though because it was cheap, then later upgraded to a Matrox.

Wanna get' my retro PC happening now again. Haha

Go for it!
Scavenging old PC's for parts is easier than you think :)

But if you're getting an HDD for a win 95 or older PC, you need to know how to format it to FAT16.

2x voodoo 2 12mb sli was a real powerhouse in that era especially cause the games back then used "glide" instead of opengl or direct3d.. all the quake engine games used that..

i actually would try to find something like a pentium II 450 mhz and at least 16MB ram.. Star Craft needed a lot of ram back in the days..

I have the old parts around still. Old Socket 462 board + Athlon XP with Windows 98+drivers.
I am an 80's kid and was gaming on PC in the 90's, so I know all the teccy stuff from that era. :P

Hard part is finding a decent monitor though, not many cheap 4:3 1024x768 panels around these days.

Cool. Now I know what my build will be ^^

Can I cascade a voodoo banshee with a vodoo 2, to get the 2D functionality of the banshee?
