Forums - Microsoft - Phil Spencer Signals Xbox One Hardware Upgrades

Sounds good to me, but it will take awhile for this vision to be realized.

wow he using some common sense.

lets see what PC's do, oh they scale up and down games and you can swap out the ram and video card. what a brilliant idea.

hell this is something Nintendo should be doing and I even hinted it be smart for them to do in previous posts, because they are launching a mid gen console and can't be too expensive or too under powered, so they need to combat the power issue later when prices drop.

Hes talking like PC games and Mobile games are compatible forever with any Device having the same OS. Many Games stop working on the newest hardware or OS. Or do all your DOS, WIndows 95-XP games still work? There are even Vista games who wont work on Windows 7 like Alone in the Dark.

Why not just waiting for a new console and making it BC with improved performance and graphics for Xbox One games? Like the PS2 did.

Ha.

This sounds ... kind of iffy, to be honest. Like they want to push hardware out quicker without making expensive generational changes, thus getting core gamers to buy every 4 years instead of every 8. This would save them so much money in terms of ad campaigns and marketing research. This is obviously an "iPhone" type model they're aiming at.

The actual difference to games, if they still have to fit within the specifications of the original, would be minimal, probably tied to visual improvements. A big deal for some, certainly, but not for everyone.

The other major impact would be that significant price drops would be a thing of the past. The price would have to stay firm throughout the generation, though that would also limit how substantial an improvement they could apply. If Xbox Next 1.0 debuts at $400 then Xbox Next 2.0 should not cost more than $400, which would probably render the difference between the two machines relatively small.

I'm not saying it's a bad concept, just that it probably won't be as meaningful as some might think. It's more of a natural evolution to where I think both Microsoft and Sony were going, anyway, with a carryover framework for games, but with added PR spin.

Somehow I get the feeling they want to ditch Xbox altogether and just move it to PC completely. They are just looking for a way that hurts them as little as possible from a marketing standpoint. Maybe they will just sell customized PCs with Windows 10 in the future which bear an Xbox Logo, but are nothing else than a normal computer. I could actually see that happening. Throw some UI like Steam Big Picture at it and there you go. I don't know if Valve is an easier enemy for them than Sony is though...

Of course, purely speculation and all.

Nintendo was sort of doing this more than 20 years ago via FX chips and N64 expansion paks. The difference of course, is that Nintendo sold one machine and used other means to pull off the upgrades giving consumers the feeling of a uniform platform.

Microsoft has lost it's way, totally. It's no longer interested in "console gaming" imo. Their hopes of changing the way the industry does business is probably a sham intended to distract everyone from their shift back to PC.

But if games designed for newer specs also work on older specs, then your argument doesen't hold water. That has to be a focus for atleast three or four years or there will be a lot of criticism.

Nintendo's New 3DS has games that work on old specs but better on new specs. However, some games are for New 3DS specs only. Funny you ignored that. :-p

A perfect metaphor imo is the piped pipper. Microsoft is leading it's fans off a cliff and they're just casually marching along into oblivion. It's pretty obvious to everyone else.

Crap like this should be moderated. Its just obnoxious, nothing remotely constructive. I just dont like reporting people.

If MS wants to upgrade X1 to be the most powerful machine on the markeret well that sounds interesting. Also a good way to postpone a new, more expensive 9th gen machine.

Since you obviously dislike Xbox you hope for the worst. This is why your thoughts mean very little in Xbox topics and I hope mods eventually warn you to stay out of them.

As I've said many time before, Xbox is a vehicle for pushing MS products on an audience that wants consoles.

Moving away from Xbox is literally throwing a massive following away (how many other TV devices sell as well as Xbox?). The Xbox audience isnt just 8th gen users. Millions of people still subscribe to Xbox live to play 360 games online. Black Ops 3 for example has sold over a million units and its online only.

Civility. Everyone. ;)

I just did that to put a spotlight on someone with nothing useful to say in regard to Xbox but is often in those threads.
