Of course they can. But considering the trends we're having this 8th gen (PS4 outselling everyone by a far margain, and both WiiU and 3DS struggling to keep up with their predecessors, specially WiiU) I think it would need a Wii-like hit to have a chance of surpassing the PS4 in sales. Being older or younger hardware isn't as important as it seems, specially when hardware is getting more and more standarized, all consoles are becoming more and more alike.

Everything resets with a new gen.

Nintendo doesnt dictrate when a new gen starts though.

Its the 8th gen now, and nintendo launching a new console, thats in no way better hardware wise than the PS4, doesnt mean its a 9th gen console.

Avg consumers dont care about what gen a console is.

They look at the product, compair it to others on the market and pick whichever they think gives them the best bang-4-buck & has the best game line up.

I dont think nintendo NX launches at under 300$ (which ps4 will be at this year holidays), and its game line up at launch will have to be very strong to pull consumers away from just buying a PS4 instead.

It looks like Nintendo catering to kids has come back to bite them in the butt as parents can find a lot of that on mobile and tablets.

If the markets change, nintendo just needs to change with it.

If they cant sell their products by catering to kids, they just have to stop doing so.

Theres no reason Nintendo cant make a console that doesnt do so.

The SNES and N64 had a good balance of both. It's with the Wii that they started catering more to a younger / family friendly audience. They can certainly do it again, but it's going to be harder to do now as back during the N64 days, the was no Xbox and Sony was just starting off. Now they will need to cater to a different audience and also convince them to pick their console over 2 very well established ones.

Timing indicates when a new gen starts and because of that, whenever nintendo releases a wii u's successor, it will be a 9th gen system.

You thinking the impossible scenario of a wii u successor weaker or on par with ps4 hardware doesn't affect the actual specs of the console and that's still irrelevant to determine the generation.

A new machine always has the potential to get the consumer attention, regardless of what's currently on the market. $299 is a sweetspot and it seems you're making overestimations over consumer preference.

Only way for reaching more people than ps4 is giving it for free.

I dont know about the price tag of the components, but how powerfull they can do with x86(and that could run all thidparty games) at a 100$ or less cheaper than xbox one and ps4?
A supercheap machine that could do everything ps4 do and run cod, mario kart, fifa... Is unrealistic. And also i thing it wouldnt beat ps4.

I'm guessing the tech behind making an X1 must be cheaper now. If they stick with ddr3 instead of gddr5, they will make some savings.

I don't think they will go with BR so that might save money and they will probably make savings on a smaller hdd.

With the WiiU I think the tablet controller was a big expense. I can see them launching a £200 Base model.

Sony's going to win this generation running away, it would take a miracle to stop that.

Nintendo should aim to overtake Microsoft at no.2 in consoles if at all possible, but even that will likely be very difficult.

The best thing they could do is to bend the rules of the game and make NX a never-ending, upgrading platform. As such NX would belong to no specific "generation".

Exactly. No one actually needs to win the be successful. For example, Microsoft is probably doing fine even with the XB1 losing to PS4 everywhere.

Perhaps but they want to be on top and released the Xone with that mentality. I don't think it's a great business technique to launch a console destined not to win. They should focus on a large userbase of at least 50 million. Because if a unified platform remains at 30 million it could hurt Nintendo.

Sure, I agree with you. But 50m should be doable, even if they mess some things up. I mean, even the 3DS was able to pull 60m+ despite being overpriced/outdated/badly designed.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

NX has no chance to beat PS4.
PS4 is the king of this generation!!!

Whatever NX is, it doesn't belong to the same generation as the ps4 and (like any console) stands a chance to beat ps4.

Nope, I am sorry. NX will be a 8th generation console as PS4 and Xbox One.

The NX imo will be a cheap handheld with a plug in TV what not. No 3rd party support because you won't be able to get 1080p res. Streaming from the HH won't do it.
