They'd be better off trying to get their casual audience back rather than go for the already occupied and satisfied hardcore crowd the Playstation and xbox brand's have lapped up.
Casuals have no real competition this gen so far in the dedicated space but the hardcore do.

If NX is indeed both HH+HC doesnt that mean it has a good amount of Hardcore audience on it thanks to the portable side?
Its crazy to attack PS4 in middle of generation and Nintendo knows that.
Nintendo will offer something different than PS4/X1, IMO what Nintendo want with NX is to pull something similar like they done with Wii (no, I don't mean just very underpowerd hardware with very strong gimmick that will lead to 100m sales). Solid hardware (that doesnt mean stronger than PS4 hardware), solid gimmick (maybe unified platform is some kind of gimmick or at least part), and affordable price ($249-299 price point).

The hardcore handheld market is dwindling big time. The DS sold mostly to kids and for games like the brain training etc. They've moved onto mobile now and parents aren't as willing to buy a dedicated handheld plus a smartphone / tablet.

Exactly. No one actually needs to win the be successful. For example, Microsoft is probably doing fine even with the XB1 losing to PS4 everywhere.

Even the 3DS sold a shit load to kids. They've moved on. When it released they hadn't but by the time the NX comes out they will. there will be a 50% decrease from the DS to the 3DS and with the NX that will surely continue.

Well OK then. Got anything to back that up? 3ds being sold to a shit load of kids which your putting as casuals basically.
Because 2ds did so well. Because in Japan 3ds didn't kill everything this gen, etc

How are kids casuals? kids are some of the most if not most hardcore gamers. They have the most time to game and usually do.
My point is these guys are getting their fix from iPhones, Samsungs, tablets etc in the mobile sphere now and in the console space the xbox, pc or PS satisfy them.

did you read what you just posted? They are into xbox and ps systems but not nintendo? Did nintendo sell 0 Hardware and 0 Software this past year?
