Forums - Gaming Discussion - HTC Vive is $799/€899/£689, Ships ‘Early April’

I just don't get people knocking the price .. A 64GB iPhone cost $749 off contract.., A single phone.. This is a headset, 2 controllers and room sensors.. The Headset has a lot of TECH in it... Right now.. A Samsung S6 plus Gear VR actually cost $749 also.. So a significantly inferior experience (no body tracking) cost about the same..

HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift will have significantly more use cases then the PS VR will. PS VR will be a gaming device and that's about it. The Vive and Rift are already being used in medical, engineering, and other scientific fields.. and this will only grow.. I agree. The PS VR will likely be the widely more used VR.. the "consumer" VR.. But it will not offer the best experience.. PS VR could still fail. I agree that pricing needs to be $299-$399 at most.. hopefully it will be.. more PS4 pricing mentality, and not PS3 lol.

The average consumer doesn't actually pay $750 for a phone, and if they do -- its on an installment plan.

Why not just say PC vr will be shite and make less money?. WHy not just say PC gaming doesn't make enough profits period?.

I dont say that - I said releasing 3 4 VRs on one market, aimed at the smallest userbase, with high price and lack of good games support may turn in 3D TV scenario. All of the VRs here will just canibalize each other, and makes games harder to develop for. Also I dont ger all of this " inferior experience " talk - if u try something for the very first time, u dont think about that.

I think it will be better if there will be only one device, with better price, bigger userbase and with better games support. Just as Sony do. Of course I can be wrong, but thats what I think now.

Even if they released one VR device, you'd still call the entire PC userbase as being small and useless. Either way it doesn't sound like it;s going to matter for PC, even if they got the price "right".

I don't get what you're going with by "inferior" experience.

I think it would be better with more competition than simply backing behind only one device. It's not at all competitive when you have one corp making it big off of an entire device that others can also create. I don't get why you go with the bigger userbase talk, afaik you see Sony as the bigger userbase.

230 million people bought iPhones in the last 12 months. Together with high end android phones probably 300 - 400 million people bought a $500+ phone in the last 12 months.

And installment plans don't make these phones any cheaper, the hardware costs are only better hidden (for people that are bad at math or don't care about the total costs).

half agree.  i think some of the experiences look interesting but interesting in the way that those projector games that sometimes appear at the mall are interesting.  for free i'd love to spend a some time playing them but getting me to drop even $300 is a pretty tall order right now.  for $800 absolutly forget about it,.. there are way better things i could spent my money on that a technology that has a high chance of dying (read as unsupported) just days after a failed launch.

Don't lie ... if Sony opened up to allowing Porn, you'd drop $299 without a flinch.

porn will come to psvr via the web browser just like you can already get porn via the web browser.  i'd probably see what vr porn is like if i had vr but i won't drop $300 on vr in the hopes i like vr porn.  too much money and i honestly don't care much for pov porn.

because it is $800.  because unlike i phone who the fuck knows if vr will be the next great thing or an overpriced paper weight.  i mean,.. show me the list of exclusive games coming to these devices.  hell, show me the list of any games coming to these devices.  show me the list of supported services and how those services are better in vr than not in vr.  show me any fucking reason why i should spend $800 that isn't summarized as "imagine the possibilities" because nintendo burned me the fuck out on that line of broken promises.

with a phone the applications and features are already established.  vr is a gamble.

me reading ur posts in this thread...

Competiton is good and I praise it as much as I can, but not when u introduce risky device like these VRs.

Future will tell who was right.

You seem to live up to your name well enough.

Competition is always good. People will buy what device they want to use on PC in terms of VR just like people have done for all the different K+M setupss from cheap to stupidly expensive (yes there is a thriving market on PC that buy expensive peripherals but I'm going to assume you didn't know that people out there are willing to pay for premium products).

Future is going to take a nice long time and in the end it doesn't matter who is right because one platform has existed and created boundless tech while the other has to be refined and built up every few years and then goes back to nothing. Also like others have said, the VR on PC already has other fields and uses, it's not all about gaming and never will be, thems the facts and only one platform works with other industries and it's not a PS4.

Here is ONE list.. ther is over 220 games on it already...  and this is JUST Oculus support..

There is a ton of INFO about what is coming and is already supported .. You just have to do your research.. as you SHOULD before buying ANY new product..

Remember the "power brick" addon psvr also needs to run on ps4.. that could be 199$ just for that..

If Sony can do 399$ for the basic bundle.. I think they will take a huge hit.. And I dont seeing them doing that.. not when 10 other companys will release (proberlly better) VR producs in 2017)

499$ for the basic model.. And 549-599$ for all needed hardware (whit out a ps4)

That addon is like a $15-30 device that simply duplicates the frames and applies the fish eye. It seriously is nothing that fancy...

If Sony launches at 499 they will lose the VR war instantly. Occulus Rift is $599 and includes the device, an xb1 controller, a camera, a motion controller, and a game --- and you can use it for PORN.

Many people like myself are in this boat:
$299 device only - Willing to preorder without hesitation.
$349 device only - Likely to preorder
$399 device only - Reluctant to buy
$449 device only - Unlikely to buy
$499 device only - Not going to buy at all

Throw in the camera, 1 or 2 wands, and possibly the navigation controller for $75-125 upgrade and its essentially the same deal for those without the addons already.

Ok.. dident know that.. if its only very cheap addon (i thought it had power and "fancy stuff" too) I can see them (best case senario) do it for 349$

And i'm not trying to take anything away from VR.. I know it will change the world.. and I know the "masses" will get "in".. much faster than most expect.. And  I expect +50 mill. who use VR (lets say more than 3 times a week) in januar 2017.. (And +100 mill who use it for concert.. movies.. "funapps" and other VR experinces regulary)

Just so I dont sound like hater..  I will also say that when it comes to gaming (in 2016) PSVR will likely be the best option (and I cant wait until my brother get it) So its not like i'm trying to take anything away from Sony.. (I have waitet 25 years for this)
