actually it's quite the opposite, if "only" 5 milion people spent a really small ammount of money on a semi-VR add-on, then immagine how much will be interested in 600$ devices (or 700€ if you prefer :v)

Remember there are other google cardboard VR vendor's, this is only pointing out what google so far sold themselves. There is many vendor's.

Google has shipped more than 5 million units of its Cardboard headset that uses sensors and a smartphone to provide an introductory virtual reality experience.

Also Google is putting VR support directly into the Android OS itself.

+

"Google will release the headset alongside new Android VR technology sometime in 2016. Bradshaw says it will use an existing smartphone that will fit into a slot on the plastic headset."

With such numbers of Google cardboard shipped numbers, do you think VR is getting a Quick start now?

Google Carboard is a joke compared to.real VR I will spend 800 on a VR Headset but would never consider buying Google cardboard. None.of my friends that pre ordered the Rift has one.

A Cardboard is not a replacement for.a Rift.

It does not have to be a replacement for, its a starting point. And Rifts Dk2 used smartphone SGNote 3 screens, so that's how google card board works, it uses smartphone screens!

Mobile cardboard VR is not poor method for VR, only if your smartphone is old, than the Quality is going to suffer.

It's no quick start to VR, but it seems people are interested anyway.

It's about as good as trying red/blue glasses at home to see what 3D cinemas are all about.
Now I wonder if it will get more people to try a real headset or turn them off from he whole thing.

From your link " The extremely simplistic experience means it's only as good as your phone -- don't expect this to measure up to full-fledged VR goggles like Oculus, Gear VR or Vive."

This is something many people who try google VR dont realize, is that if you have a shitty phone your going to get a shitty experience. However if you have a good phone with a great screen google Cardboard is pretty cool and gives a much better 3D experience and is more closer to the real thing then
red/blue glasses compared to Real 3D Glasses.

Plus phone tech is getting better all the time. Who knows Phones could be the main driving force for VR.

The same is true for red/blue glasses, only as good as your screen. I actually watched Coraline in 3D with those glasses (not red and blue yet same principle) on a calibrated 1080p projector. Miles different from an average tv, still miles different from an actual 3D cinemea. Yet the 3D came through pretty well.

The lenses in google cardboard won't be of the same quality, neither will headtracking be of the same quality no matter how good the phone. So yeah a good phone is closer to the real thing than a shitty phone, still not all that representative of something tailor made for VR. VR is more than just a phone on your head. Google isn't helping with that.

No its not the same. All them types of 3d anaglyph glasses alter the colours compared to how the newer ones do it and the quality is no where near comparable to real 3D glasses.

However Googles VR is doing the same thing the other VR units are doing, and depending on your phone and the right VR unit attached to it (Not on about the google cardboard ones but the 3rd party ones bases on its design) can achive an image quality thats just as good or pretty damn close to the Real VR units. And if you really think the Tracking wont catch up i would love to know your reasons for this?. Sure the Phone tracking might not be as good now, but you can use another program for the tracking if using it for PC games such as TrackIR etc until the phones get there. As for the 3D sound all you need is 3D headphones. So what exactly is in them VR units that you think wont be in phones in say the next 3-5 years.

Now you're adding things. Phones don't have accurate 1000hz tracking right now. Phones don't come with motion controllers or any external controllers. Phones don't come with 3D head phones. That's all not in phones, nor will it be in the next 3-5 years.
Yes, anaglyph glasses alter the colours, google cardboard is no substitute for external tracking and the lack of motion controllers.

What's in VR units that won't be in phones? The complete package, tailor made and fine tuned to the specific hardware components involved.
But if you have trackIR, hydra razer controllers, 3d headphones and a good (clean undamaged) phone, well you still need to find games made with all that in mind and get it all working together.

They should start selling cardboard houses to the homeless.

Mobile cardboard VR is not poor method for VR, only if your smartphone is old, than the Quality is going to suffer.

Google Cardboard is an horrible experience. It has no low persistance and therefor is puke inducing. Samsung Gear VR for example has this. Also it has way better headtracking. Google Cardboard also does not have additional sensors it relies on the weak build in sensors of the phone. The Apps do not have low level hardware access unlike Gear VR Apps. The FOV is too limited the optics are shit.

Mobile VR done decent is Gear VR Mobile VR doing everything wrong is Google Cardboard. Also we still have no positional tracking for mobile VR not even in the Gear and the refresh rates are too low. And there is an reason why Oculus went with 2 non smartphone screens for their consumer version. IPD adjustment and higher pixelfill in the custom panels plus higher refresh.

Cardboard is so far behind the Oculus its not even funny. And also Gear VR is significantly behind.

Its not just about the screen that makes an VR experience.

Mobile VR is the future, Oculus rift is the present.
