Google Carboard is a joke compared to.real VR I will spend 800 on a VR Headset but would never consider buying Google cardboard. None.of my friends that pre ordered the Rift has one. 

A Cardboard is not a replacement for.a Rift.

It does not have to be a replacement for, its a starting point. And Rifts Dk2 used smartphone SGNote 3 screens, so that's how google card board works, it uses smartphone screens!

 

Mobile cardboard VR is not poor method for VR, only if your smartphone is old, than the Quality is going to suffer.
