I never said or implied that R&D for a slim model even existed. I stated the opposite.

At this point you are just aruging around yourself.

I'm arguing about the fact few people have made in this thread which is Sony supposedly does not NEED slim console yet. That claim is nothing but bullshit. Slim console is only a evolution of cutting manufacting costs and for that reason it will be launched without delay. It almost sounds as some people think Slim-consoles are being made because of smaller design and that design is the main selling point when it has always been the lower price.

Yep, exactly. Most of the posts here are like ''ps4 is already slim and small no need for slim version''. While i understand there are people that may not know how these things work (smaller specs, lower costs, more profitability) there are already here members that explained why a slimmer design is not just for the looks and despite that you keep seeing comments like ''ps4 is already slim and small''.

The cooler & psu will shrink again, once the chip uses half as much power as current models do (14-16nm + finFETs, will be a huge step from 28nm).

It wont get much smaller than current PS4s I think. Unless since its release, they found a more cleaver way to manage the PCB layout.

The main thing will be it ll be cheaper to produce (smaller psu & cooling unit, slightly smaller cabinet), and maybe save a bit on the chip itself.

Which will lead to a price cut.

Exactly. The current cpu is 28nm, a 14nm process would have a tremendous impact on the cpu size, power, cooling, and cost.  I'm not a specialist, but everything is about halved. And the PS4 cpu is most of the console, most of its heat, it's a massive and relatively costly APU.

So, when ? I bet on 2016 ! For 2 reasons, First, Sony has been a little more than 1 year late compared to Intel for any process (90 nm, 65 nm, 45 nm), and Intel started using 14 nm on march 2015. Second, AMD is said to be switching to 14 nm process in 2016.

i dont see how much smaller they can make the thing

PSN & XBOX GT : cutzman25

I think it's more likely that the PS4 slim will be more likely in 2017.

The PS4 has big momentum right now and a killer game line-up both exclusive and multi-platform next year so they don't need the sales bump a PS4 slim would give.

I think it's more likely we will see a price cut for the PS4 in 2016 with the new PS4 slim coming out later.

Still there is a small chance in my mind it may happen Christmas 2016.

I wouldn't exactly call the lineup a killer one but it's pretty good especially compared to the previous years.

What year for which console would you say is better?

I wouldn't think there will be a slimmer ps4 for some time, not only is the console Tiny right now (even including it's psu inside that tiny case unlike the X1 and Wii-U) but also have you heard how little noise the PS4 makes while it's in operation, the only real audible noise I notice is when the drive fires up for a second to check that the right game disk in inserted to start a retail game... but even then the drive is only active while installing the game the first time or doing that check before opening software. I think it's actually the second quietest console infront of my TV right now, second only to the PSTV.

But yeah, current PS4 is tiny and quiet. I can't picture it being smaller without dropping out the PSU onto the power cord at which point it's less compact a system in total imo.

Xbone had a better fall lineup the past 2 years. At least in my opinion.

PS4 has in 2016 exclusive

Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted 4, The Last Guardian, Gran Turismo Sport, Gravity Rush 2 (not that hyped for him), Ratchet and Clank, The Tomorrow Children (bit indie I know), Drawn to Death and Dreams (media molecule)

Timed/console excusive

Street Fighter 5, Firewatch, The Witness, No Mans sky, Paragon, Hellblade, Nier Automata, Persona 5, Star Ocean 5 and Boundless.

Not to mention many indie titles such as Abzu.

Don't know what the Xbox One has had to compete with this line-up in the past two years.

In my opinion:

I cant remember the last time ANY console, had a lineup as strong as the PS4's 2016.

You would probably have to go back to the PS2 days, for something kinda simular.
