Forums - Sony - Interview with PlayStation Japan CEO: PS4 won't disappoint in 2016; Vita important to target younger users

http://www.dualshockers.com/2016/01/19/ps4-wont-disappoint-in-2016-ps-vita-important-for-young-targets-according-to-playstation-japan-ceo/

PS4 and PS Vita had a successful holiday season in Japan, selling quite a lot more than in the same period of 2015, yet Sony Computer Entertainment Japan and Asia President Atsushi Morita feels that 2016 is the year to watch, as he explained during an interview on Famitsu.

First of all, he talked about PS Vita, mentioning that the console was born from the idea of offering a home console experience in a portable console, and that philosophy has not changed, and he would like to continue with it.

In particular, he’d also like to keep promoting the console to children, as he feels that children are very sensitive to early gaming experiences, that leave a strong impression. He also wants to encourage communication between parents and childen, and for that the PS Vita is “very important.”

In that field Minecraft continues to have strong sales, and grew massively in 2015, but Morita-san also expects Dragon Quest Builders to have a wide adoption among children. He also feels that while many children play Minecraft nowadays, there are many that still don’t know about it (in Japan), and there he sees a further opportunity for expansion.

Moving on to PS4, he Morita-san mentioned that the plans for 2016 have two main factors. One is to steadily continue to work towards medium terms plan, to settle the PlayStation brand as everyone’s entertainment hub.

Secondly, in 2016 there are really a lot of games that will be released, and 2015 laid the foundations for a further expansion of the market. In 2016, Sony needs to pick up from there and push hard. It might not be always easy, but it’s something that must be absolutely pursued. According to Morita-san 2016 is a very important year, and he’ll do whatever he can to achieve success. Since he’s going to give his all, he hopes customers will look forward to it.

Also, he’d like to push (Japanese) developers to create games that weren’t considered possible, and to compete on worldwide market, and on the other hand, to continue develpoing uniquely Japanese experiences, and Sony is going to give them its full support.

Lastly, Morita-san explained that there are so many things he should do and wants to do, that at times even his own staff is concerned. Ultimately, he’s confident that fans won’t be disappointed.

Very mind. Much blown.

"He also feels that while many children play Minecraft nowadays, there are many that still don’t know about it (in Japan), and there he sees a further opportunity for expansion."

I can't believe there are children in Japan that, after all these years, still don't know about Minecraft. Do they live on an island? Wait...

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Noooooooooow Vita targets younger? If they would have aimed Vita a younger crowd in beginning it would be doing much better.

I'd thought they had given up completely on the Vita. I guess it's good to know they're still trying, sort of.

Haha.  They're not really trying though.  They published one game on Vita last year in Japan (Minecraft retail) that outsold every PS4 game they released.  Their response has been "we're going to push Minecraft more" and "buy a game from a 3rd party!", lol.

A lot of talk but no action

PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m

Want to prove you're supporting a system, Sony? Then make games for it. You have enough extra studios to make an iteration for Vita of all your major IPs in less than two years.
