the Zapper isn't a 'gimmick'. its a functional and pretty fun device that was emulated on virtually EVERY console in one form or another up to today. The Master System had a light gun as well, as did the Super Nintendo, as did the Genesis (their scope gun variation), and onward systems had more advanced 'light guns' in the Guncons and other gun game guns that essentially did the same thing
if you seriously also are implying that the R.O.B. unit pushed many NES consoles then you have no idea what you're talking about, R.O.B. was not a popular device as its game worked poorly
Nintendo dropped R.O.B. and that system bundle very early long because they had immensely more success with simply doing a regular system + zapper bundle
stop talking about things you know nothing about. just the implication that R.O.B. was any part of the NES era's success shows you have no knowledge on the topic, they didn't even continue to sell R.O.B. units much after launch
Nintendo DOES do their best when stick to their roots, AKA the NES and SNES. the only reason that the N64 and Gamecube lagged against competition is not because of doing a more traditional system but because of strange decisions by Nintendo (AKA sticking with cartridges instead of disks, and using a mini disk to battle against pirating that turned off third parties)
Nintendo has not made a regular home console without any weird choices in quite a while. if the Wii U had simply been released with higher specs and a regular controller it probably would be selling like two times better than it has
