Nintendo appear to have been ignoring the whole "generation" nonsense for years. If the NX takes that form, I'd be pleased, too.

No they aren't, they still basically cling to the same formula of the 1980s which is you pay them basically $300 (cost adjusted, give or take) and they give you a system for 5-6 years, that they really will only support for 4 years because it will take them 1-2 years to prep for the next system.

That is nothing like the model that STEAM or Apple or Android use.

If I feel like upgrading my iPhone, I can do so when I want. Because that system offers me choice.

I'm a STEAM member. I can upgrade my PC setup any time I want to be able to enjoy more games or the same games with better fidelity and game play when ever I wish.

*I* have the choice in those setups. In the console setup I'm treated like I'm still 8-years-old and need to wait 5-6 years because mom/dad certainly be happy buying me a new system.

I'm tired of that whole stupid industry norm to be honest. Change it up Nintendo, it's not like the console industry is working out for you at all anyway, so what really do you have to lose at this point?

Nintendo, Sony and MS have been using same formula of the 1980's because they have all been constrained by development times of dedicated console machines. (sorry, I was editing this point into my post as you were quoting it).

Sony and MS seemed to have synced up their launch times because of the whole generation competition thing, but Nintendo is less concerned about when they launch, which is why they appear to have been ignoring the whole "generation" nonsense.

How many debates have there been about whether the Wii U is a 7th gen or 8th gen etc? It's clear Nintendo are not concerned about the "generation" thing. Their priorities have been different.

Nintendo are promising NX bringing about a new concept, and there's no reason to suggest that they can't break that mould. Let's hope that they do.

I agree with you, OP.

I just wish this wasn't even a topic of discussion. I was tired of reading about this six months ago.

It's gonna be a long year. I only post in some of the more interesting ones.

NX should just end the whole "generation" nonsense. It's stupid to reset your market share to 0 every 5-6 years.

Just make a continually evolving service as the central pillar of the platform and let people upgrade with options over the years on their OWN schedule.

My schedule for wanting/needing a new piece of system is different from someone else's, everyone is different. The game industry should become more flexible like STEAM, iOS, Android, etc. are.

Some people like a new iPhone every 1-2 years, some people use the same smart phone for 4-5 years without complaint.

Look at all this bickering over stupid shit like "I need 5 years! I prefer 4" ... who cares. Nintendo's goal should just to get people into the NX ecosystem in whatever hardware form factor suits that person the best and then sell them freaking games. Remember that? Selling games? Isn't that the damn point?

The industry is not 90% 7-14 year old boys anymore reliant on mom/dad/saving money in a piggy back to afford a video game; we don't need to be talked down to and told when to upgrade, if game consoles aren't toys anymore, then stop treating us like fucking toy buyers.

That's what I would like to see. End of all this nonsense and introduce a more democratic model that gives the consumer a say in their own freaking entertainment. What's Nintendo clinging to the old model for anyway? They have basically nothing left in the console market ... a puny little 10 million base of buyers, so why cling to an outdated way of offering hardware to consumers when it doesn't even work for you anymore in the first place.

generations are awesome. it makes the whole thing a hell of a lot more fun. i like when successors to consoles come out. consoles are great. you get to look forward to their libraries and all sorts of fun shit. furthermore, generations are necessary. you cant stick with the same hardware for more than 6 years, its just old and outdated. it needs to be replaced at some point. personally, i enjoy generations a whole lot. it gives the industry a lot more character. i still am not seeing your problem in how it is currently being done. the way console generations work is just fine.

I was hoping it would release this year. Who knows. Maybe they'll introduce a major price drop in the Spring, prior to the E3 NX reveal.

Calling the nx a wii u successor is meaningless when the thing hasn't been announced. Nintendo would get 0 dollars from porting Zelda U to the wii u successor, because no extra person will buy the game.

Except they'd get money from buyers of the gamr on the platform and in the long run the could be more potential buyers of the game then on the Wii U, it happened easily with TP.

No, they wont and they didn't with TP. TP gc version couldn't be played with a wiimote + nunchuck. If it could, wii owners would simply buy the GC game, no need for a port.

Not only the wii u base is and will be much higher than 10m, since when does one generation determine the maximun that can be sold in the future?

I would really like to see both consoles around for another year (wiiU) or 2 for (3DS) but I am not sure - and Somethign is still making me think of fusion type solution.

We all know that both consoles do not have software announced past May - or very little or not very great!

And we all know that nintendo has struggled to create enough launch suupport.

I cannot see how it is now possible for them to laucnh two consoles in the same year.
I cannot see how it is now possible for them too sostain launch/first year for two new consoles.

can the 3DS be holding on past 2018 as it is?
If no new games will be named by April - Can we take this as proof that new consoles are coming and coming quickly?

Switch!!!

"when in history was a console $300 the year it got replaced?"

If this is the base of your argumentation, that might not be the best way to start the thread.

Soundwave already have the idea like how iPhones/iPads have been. have systems like NX Mini, NX HD, etc. that would give variety and flexibility to the consumer market. And upgrades of the specs in 2-3 years or so but not all gamers are required to upgrade.
I like that idea and i think it would benefit Nintendo as well.

With regard to the date of release, I've put NX HH 2016 then NX HC 2017, it gives Nintendo time and the gamers option on what to pick. since they really need to unify their platforms as Japan is more on handheld while rest of the world wanted a home console.

Wtf are you on about? They made money easily with TP's port it's the highest selling Zelda game with the Wii version selling 7m by itself, what controller the version used doesn't even factor into this point.
